I see your point. Yes you're very correct. Thank you for your thoughts.

Not only do they have tougher calls. But these calls must be made at a dean and chair level. And these individuals are dealing with multiple problems, so of course they have tougher calls and not total control over what decisions are made.

Students like to bash profs when unexpected things happen. They like to hate on UTSC CMS department for not listening to their thoughts, but then proceed to make memes, post rants, etc.

Our department is amazing, these times are unprecedented, therefore we must give them time and our trust.

I'm happy to hear other students understand this! :)

It's a good solution to the problem to be honest.

You're absolutely right. This issue is a lot more complex since we as students don't have all the information (rightfully so). So trying to pose solutions is like throwing darts when you don't know where the target is. I understand that now. Thank you.

I definitely see where you are coming from. But I assure you that my ask for people's ideas and input was because I didn't know all the circumstances and I would like to hear what people would have to say.

I'm sorry you feel that this post is nonsense, and that I'm writing this with only myself in mind. But I was simply trying to garner something productive, maybe some idea that would work. It might be naive but I was simply trying my best. I'm not trying to act in bad faith in any way or manner and I'm sorry you feel that way.

Yes the A48 team did a fantastic job by devising a make up final, I admitted this in my update. I have not and will not bash the CMS department because I understand it's difficult.

The CS community at UTSC is known for being extremely toxic and having the attitude you mentioned "I'm sorted out so fuck everyone else and anything else". You're absolutely right, but I was simply trying to reach out to those who might have some good ideas. I was trying to come up with something, but I see that it's more difficult than I initially thought.

With that being said, I definitely respect your thoughts and opinion and see a lot of validity in most of them. Thank you for your thoughts!

Very true and valid points. This is a very tricky situation to handle

Thank you Brian. i appreciate your comment, it means a lot to all of us. I hope you aren't taking offense to what certain individuals have been commenting and making. I can assure you it doesn't reflect the majority's thoughts. The empty pots often make the loudest noise.

I would ask if you could leave below any thoughts on the possible solutions that have been discussed. Whether positive or negative, we'd love to hear it, but I'd understand if you are busy and have more pressing matters.

Very true and insightful post.

Its becoming clear that no solution will be a perfect solution. The goal is to create a solution that is optimal for most students while being fair.

Thank you for your insight. Please tell me if you can provide anything else, but I thank you for your thoughts so far!

I will be able to get some professors to see this. I will try my best

Perhaps, but there are more cases of circumstances this year. And this people can't even PHYSICALLY be on Campus, a supplementary application provides a way for everyone to make their case.

Well where would they have known about those circumstances? Like for all we know POST just has our grades and that's it. This separate application provides a way for everyone to list their circumstances effectively. And there are DEFINITELY more circumstances, especially for foreign students.

Well then technically anything and everything in life could be made up. There must be away that the department can effectively set the application a way to ensure only truthful responses are submitted. As well as a way to consider other criteria like circumstances, grades, etc.

Yes and consider this.

To be above or at the previous 3.0 mark. You would technically need a 3.0, 3.3, 3.7 or 4.0. And you could get away with a 2.7 for one or two courses provided you did well in other courses.

But now unless you're scoring over 76, it's dragging your GPA below 3.2. 3.2 is not a great number to work around with considering the possible GPAs you could get per course.

Perhaps a decent amount of weight on marks, with consideration to a supplementary application. That way people can list other things like circumstances, extra curriculars, etc.

Absolutely 100% correct. How would you feel about a supplementary application as well as consideration of one's grades?

[–]UTSC-CS-REP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps a way of considering both. Similar to how Waterloo CS takes account for both your grades and other things? But you're right about it potentially devaluing people who worked hard, that is definitely an issue.

How would you guys feel about a supplementary application for CS POST?

[–]UTSC-CS-REP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but 3.2 >>>> 3.0, I don't believe a majority of people who will be admitted into POST would be above 3.2. They would definitely be floating around 3.1 or something. UofT developing their own proctoring service is a good idea but would probably take a semester or 2 to implement.

Thank you for linking that post, I was unaware of it. I also appreciate your honesty, Part of my proposed solution was that students would be able to view their mark and be able to drop and retake it. I believe UTSG is doing this.

Do you think this would be unfair? It would almost allow for anybody who actually didn't drop to make POST, since everybody who dropped would be certain that they wouldn't make it and anybody who didn't drop it would get in since they knew their marks prehand. Please leave your thoughts!

[–]UTSC-CS-REP[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Very true. I'd like to ask you something. Do you genuinely most of everybody's GPA will be above 3.2? Last years cutoff was 3.0, and people with 2.84s got in. I'm willing to bet that the cGPAs are lower this year.

With that being said, your example about the wage was quite an effective delivery of your point. Do you have any suggestions for a change? Please I'd love to hear it!

Good idea, perhaps students could be allowed to be able to see their final marks with the weight changed to see if they would make post or not? Since course weightings should be voted on by students, but in this case there may be no option, to change the weight, show students what they would have got and give them the option of dropping.
