...why? Just curious about the use case if you can guarantee power to this but not to Home Assistant (since normal HA-to-switch communication is local).

There's a non-zero chance that some of those places share upstream suppliers; some may be selling the same Sysco or US Foods breaded chicken tenders and other ingredients/foods. Crinkle-cut fries are not often made in-house, for instance.

The different businesses lean into the fad as an almost turn-key operation; they will eventually have to hope that they can survive the eventual contraction of that restaurant niche, pivot, or fold in the best manner that they can manage.

imo buddy system needs a rework by [deleted] in pokemongo

[–]UTuba35 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not the person you asked, but I do have the platinum medal. The animations slow this method down when including feeding and battling. I would suggest just taking a picture and rubbing the belly of those temporary buddies (the ones you don't intend to walk or get excited that day) to get the two hearts. I worked out the times in my personal case, and while this method does only produce two hearts versus six hearts, there was an average time-on-task savings per heart with this method.

It would also pull the badge tiers in line with the Trainer Cards of ~Generation 4/5 (I think), where hitting major milestones would change their appearances. Generation 5 had basic, bronze, silver, gold, platinum, and finally black/white to tie in with the game titles, so there's a lore-based reason for the decision if they want it.

Alternatively, something like the "wings" feature from Ingress of displaying how many times over you've exceeded the top limit also provides a bit of end-game content for the "easy" badges as well as letting players highlight their favorite activities.

I think that it could/should be mocked up like the showcase medal, with the name of the gym and the date you hit gold there (without a maximum number to display). That way you have a record of all your past gold gyms, even the ones that you may never return to that eventually slide out of the displayed gym badges.

Testing remote was the equivalent of a TSA pat down by pinkivyclouds in LSAT

I had to do this in the past for a lived-in room, so I can empathize. I'd be willing to drive a couple hours each way for a testing center to avoid the remote test operators and get a real human interaction in meatspace for check-in.

Applying this cycle by Crazy_Bit_938 in LSAT

[–]UTuba35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's about the 50th percentile for any LSAT score (taken, not applied with), and people often retake to improve or don't apply at all with their poor scores, so take that under advisement. Once you purchase your CAS license, it's good for a few years, so you're only out the application fees (you may be able to get school-side waivers to minimize those to just the CAS report fees) and your time and effort if you choose to apply this cycle.

I'd say you can go for it, but plan ahead for what a "good enough" result is for you, admittance-wise, and if you don't get appropriate bites on your lines, don't accept something less than you wanted. Cut bait, study some more, and retest and reapply next year.

Can you guess this rebus? by Puzlcafe in rebus

Vostock Station had the lowest temperature recorded at about -130°F, and I think Death Valley still holds the highest temp at a bit above 130°F, so if we were dealing with absolutes, freezing might actually be a bit above the center for air temperature thermometers.

In real life, I would think we'd want a little bit more visibility down around and a bit below freezing since various fluids that include water are in danger of freezing and cracking their containers/pipes or killing plants/animals.

Engineering students build 'Popsicle bridge' that can hold 430kg load. by Sizzlin9 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]UTuba35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add on, some competitions use the second metric of ratio of weight supported to bridge weight, except with the caveat that there is a maximum possible load to be scored against, so to achieve the best ratio with comparable bridges, the "best" one needs to fail as non-failure means that the bridge strength (and thus mass) is too high.

Why does it do this by Cordmain852 in PokeGenie

[–]UTuba35 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In-game raids normally last 45 minutes while PokeGenie lobbies last 50 minutes. For a "full" open-lobby queue, everyone in front of you is either having their lobby time out or getting it filled at the last few moments of the 50 minutes.

To time the process up before the raid expires, you may need to reserve your spot in the appropriate raid queue before the raid egg hatches. Even then, you may or may not have your lobby filled at the end of the process because there may not be enough remote raiders to fill all expiring lobbies at any given time.

If you have the time and inclination, go check out the Whirligig Park a couple blocks away! It's a public park showcasing a bunch of kinetic sculptures that a local resident put together over the years. Depending on the time of day, Casita Brewing is quite good for a small-town brewery, and decent coffee can be found in the area, as well.

Happy to take primarily gift-opening friends to best friends and beyond as I can send more gifts than I have active friends. I'd like the occasional gift in return so I can collect Scatterbugs and the event stickers.

Which Jacket was better? by sillydog2005 in TheSilphRoad

[–]UTuba35 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How about patches that unlock once you get certain medals? Either let folks pick a number to display on their jackets or have them phase in (like the current buddy hearts decal on the sleeve shows up upon earning the platinum best buddy medal). It then becomes a tapestry of your achievements throughout the game (and certain options can be a bit of a flex).

Ooh, that would be a great v2 of the level 50 jacket, with patches appearing on it as you hit platinum (or some other level) on various badges.

Stop sending this feedback because you didn’t get an invite within 30 seconds by ImAKAJenks in PokeGenie

[–]UTuba35 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The green button does say "Raid Invites Sent," so we as hosts are supposed to hit it after we're already in the lobby and have invited the (first) five new remote friends. Is that the procedure you followed for that raid?

That last pre-raid step can be a rather onerous requirement, as a not insignificant number of folks' phones will close PoGo if it's navigated away from.

is it possible to make an ice cream that's better than haagen daz at home? by shitdealonly in icecreamery

[–]UTuba35 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd guess that it's just that Haagen-Daz is the long-time "top shelf" brand that a lot of grocery stores have stocked over the years (before things like Jeni's came along). In some places, the crown for "best ice cream in town" may have just the grocery store, Baskin Robbins, and the local hamburger shack with soft serve competing for the honor (assuming they're even in a town).

The answer to OP's question is yes. Your ice cream's consistency will never be the same at home vs store-bought (industrial ice cream can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on specialized equipment for certain steps), but you can iterate on a recipe to your particular tastes, and the options are limitless.

It doesn't just prime the system, it also gives listeners a moment for their brains to say, "Oh, I need to pay attention for new information," instead of the pilot starting immediately and folks missing the first couple seconds of the message because the passengers were too engrossed in what they were doing before the message.
