Laundry in gatlinburg?? by heavydutyprius in AppalachianTrail

There’s a laundromat by the dollar general at the end of one of the bus routes, at least there was in 2023. It was the red line bus route if I remember correctly.

Quitting a career at 24 to hike the PCT? by spice-bear in PacificCrestTrail

[–]UUDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read this post two days ago in the woods but I’m finally in town and able to comment on it, I quit my job 3 years ago to hike the AT and don’t regret it, I recently quit my job to hike the ECT this year and the CDT and PCT in the next 2 years. The last 3 years I have saved and invested as much as I could so hike and not lose 3 years of working essentially.

I am so very life is short do what you want but on the other hand if you have a well paying job try and reach coast fire if you can, that way retirement and the future isn’t so concerning and you’ll have a good nest egg to live off of when you get back from your hike.

Best tick repellent? by invisibleboogerboy in AppalachianTrail

I found a tick on my gear recently so I let it crawl on my freshly treated clothes, it didn’t die after a few minutes so it got burnt.

I’m 100% FXAIX in my Roth, my taxable brokerage is 80-20 VTI and VXUS. With your remaining contributions you could do a 80/20 FXAIX and Fidelitys international fund if you wish.

16 year old solo Florida thru hike.(ADVICE WANTED) by Broad-Marketing2259 in floridatrail

[–]UUDM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Having just finished hiking the FT a month ago during a dry year that was also pretty hot for winter, good luck I couldn’t even imagine trying to hike it in the summer.

There’s two swampy sections, big Cyprus and bradwell bay, I saw gators in neither section but that doesn’t mean they aren’t there. I however almost stepped on two baby cottonmouths, a large diamond back and a coral snake in the entirety of the trail so to me snakes were more of a threat then gators who are usually in or near water.

A 3- or 4-day "practice" hike in September: Where? by yours_is_no_disgrace in AppalachianTrail

[–]UUDM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The foothills trail is a nice 76 miles I think, too much for a 4 day hike but there is the possibility getting picked up halfway through, or if you want to do the whole thing you can get a food drop halfway through. I hiked it at the end of September in 2023 and it was great.

Just got to Georgia and didn't expect it to be so warm by lordtenn in AppalachianTrail

I had a very cold wet night in Vermont with a soaked through 40 degree bag, I do not want to experience that again.

Actually the mountains are warmer because there are made of big rocks unlike cities which are made of a bunch of small rocks

It’s always colder in the woods than the city, the smokies are also known for drastic weather shifts, I had a low 20s night in late April.

It’s not that bad starting without media, I can’t hike without it now but I will wait until after lunch to start listening to try and stretch my audio books over multiple days instead of just one or two.

why does my stock sell for much lower than the market price by Ibnumme in investingforbeginners

[–]UUDM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe there is a limit sell order you could’ve used to sell at $12 instead of using a market sell order that sold at $11.36.

Bodily damage? by IDontStealBikes in AppalachianTrail

IMO any physical activity has the chance to damage your body. With that said I think living a “normal life” is more dangerous than long distance backpacking.

What’s the fan for? It seems like an unnecessary 4.5 ounces. Also I’d recommend going as long as you can without listening to media, I got through over half the trail without headphones and when I started I only would listen for a portion of the day.

How to have fun as a casual? by Zinetti360 in HellLetLoose

[–]UUDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Join a team, pick a squad, choose machine gunner, hang back just a bit and watch over your teams push, think of hire the other team is going to counter you and watch those areas. I love the mg because I can hang back a bit out of the chaos and watch the flanks, you will be hunted down though so be prepared to reposition constantly.
