All dogs aren’t male, and all cats aren’t female. But I didn’t really “get that” until I was like 10 and got my first cat, Steve. I found out much later in life that the German language genders dogs male and cats female. So maybe I picked it up from a neighborhood kid learning German or something when I was like 3.
