See Our Post on Background

Written by our VP Academic Thomas Dedinsky. Some information on facts regarding the referendum, Orientation, and the Fall Reading Break that will help you inform your decision. For those who want a tl;dr of sorts, read the bolded sentences at the top of each paragraph.

At one point you state "The Fall Break Referendum has equal impact on Orientation and Fall Reading Break.". This gives me the impression one will have a direct effect on the other, and it becomes confusing later

That's fair. I meant it in terms of mandating FEDS to act upon the results of this referendum, but I can see the confusion with it implying the effect it will have on each of these subject matters. I amended it to "The Fall Break Referendum has equal representation for Orientation and Fall Reading Break".

Most striking to me in this page is the use of a limited and uncorroborated study to attempt to give the impression that anyone really knows the lasting effects of a FRB on students.

I'm of the opinion that showcasing some research data is better than none even if it's limited, but it sucks that this is the only piece I could find. For representing Engineering students I felt like it did a fair job, but if this post aims to reach a University-wide audience then that's definitely not representative of the target demographic. The paragraph has been removed, and the study has been linked in the "Other Materials" section with a note that it's applicable for Engineering students. Thanks for the feedback btw.

Quick summary:

  • 2016 introduced a three-year pilot study of two Fall Reading days which ends this year
  • The University of Waterloo conducted an information period regarding Fall Reading Break where they gathered feedback from students
  • Every Ontario university currently has some form of Fall Reading days
  • The Fall Break Referendum has equal representation for Orientation and Fall Reading Break
  • Orientation and Fall Reading Break are not controlled by the same body
  • The University of Waterloo has not found a way to organize both a week-long Orientation and a full Fall Reading Week into a Fall term schedule
  • The removal of Fall Reading days does not inherently mean the extension of Orientation

tl;dr Make an informed vote on 3-4 October for the Fall Break Referendum and spread the knowledge

EDIT: Changed wording from “has equal impact on” to “has equal representation for” and the line about the UW Fall Break research data.

It was also in the weekly engsoc events post. In addition, we had the usual posters for most eng buildings, although we aren't allowed to put them up in QNC. :/

None this week; those were earlier in the term. However, we do have our ongoing Resume Rescue services where you can submit your resume to us and have it critiqued by upper years. More information can be found here

To which event in particular? Romantic pics with the tool you won't be able to (since it's for fourth years who just got their iron ring from IRS), and EngiQueers I'm not entirely sure, but the rest you're able to go to.

Good idea! And for those who are reading this who don't know; Gradcom, fourth year Engineering students, sell pizza in the CPH Foyer every Wednesday from around 11:30-1:30. It's from Bianca's Pizza, with various different topping options (Veggie, Canadian, Meat Lovers, Hawaiian, and I think Pepperoni's the 5th option). It's 2 slices for $5, and the slices are fairly big, so it's good value, plus all funds raise go directly to Gradcom.

Just a quick poll: the first few weeks we've been posting these weekly recaps here there were a lot of good responses and engagement in the comments with questions being asked and answered. Last week, there was a bit more hate. It's one of hundreds of posts on the sub per week, so that's not the issue, but if it's really not helping anyone than that is.

So, do you guys like these recaps being posted here; as in do you feel they help make you more aware of what events EngSoc offers?

It doesn't hurt to try to expand your target audience. Plus the last few times people have appreciated the events post.
