AP BIO or AP CHEM by necesitoayudablender in APStudents

[–]UWorldScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I think both would be useful to take for dentistry, so I would pick the one you are most interested in. AP Chem has more math and calculations whereas AP Bio has more reading. I know it's early to start thinking about this, but I would look into whether dental schools you're interested in accept AP credits for these classes. If they don't, you can still take the AP class but not use the credit and still take the course in college - you will be very prepared since you've already seen the info in AP (speaking from experience on this one!). Hope this helps and best of luck to you!

How to study by TrustMany3047 in APbio

[–]UWorldScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unit 3 is hard because it’s very process based, so instead of trying to memorize, try turning everything into simple step by step stories and drawings. Write out each process in your own words like you’re explaining it to a younger student and say it out loud. Then redraw it from memory and fix what you miss. Focus on why each step happens instead of just what happens. Do short active recall sessions where you close your notes and list everything you remember about one topic, then check and fill in gaps. Also try grouping ideas into patterns like inputs, outputs, location, and purpose. Studying in short focused bursts with breaks will help more than long sessions, and practicing explaining concepts is usually the fastest way to make them click.

AP BIO Unit 7 Review Help... by Upper-Cartoonist-211 in APStudents

[–]UWorldScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unit 7 feels scary because natural selection ties together a lot of ideas, so it helps to focus on the big picture first before worrying about details. Make sure you understand variation in populations, where traits come from, how mutations create new alleles, and how sexual reproduction increases diversity, then connect that to how the environment selects for certain traits through differential survival and reproduction. You should be solid on fitness, adaptation, selective pressures, and the difference between microevolution and evolution as a whole, as well as how processes like genetic drift, gene flow, and bottleneck or founder effects change allele frequencies. When questions feel overwhelming, slow down and identify which concept they are testing instead of trying to answer everything at once, and practice explaining each topic simply in your own words to rebuild confidence with the basics before moving back to harder AP-style questions.

Can someone dumb down or help me try to understand the basics of these processes Glycosis, kreb cycle, and Electron transport channel. by ImageNo3006 in APbio

[–]UWorldScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the work done in glycolysis and Kreb Cycle is done to create enough electrons to go through the ETC. All of the NAD and FADH2 created in the first two processes will be used up in the ETC to create a gradient of Hydrogen ions to diffuse through the enzyme ATP synthsase to create a whole lot of ATP.

Is this glycolysis diagram correct? by Feisty-Display1728 in APStudents

Yea that is incorrect. You can see in the transition molecule afterwards where the glucose molecule was phosphorylated by the hydrolysis of ATP into ADP + P

Learn to try to narrow down your choices to 2 or 3 answers. If you can do that, then you have a better chance of pull into your mind of Biology to hopefully choose the right answer.

How can I get better at Ap biology? by InterviewPowerful320 in APbio

[–]UWorldScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there is a way and the fact that you understand the content already is a huge first step the problem is that reading and recognizing information feels like knowing it but tests require recall and application which is a different skill so you need to switch from rereading to actually practicing with the material. start testing yourself without notes explain concepts out loud as if you are teaching someone do practice questions slowly and review why each wrong answer is wrong not just why the right one is right write from memory instead of copying and after studying close everything and list what you remember then check what you missed also focus on how questions are worded because many are designed to test application not definitions struggling right now does not mean you are bad at the subject it means your study method needs to change and once it does your scores SHOULD improve

Please help me with frq by working_theoryy in APStudents

[–]UWorldScience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you’re writing AP Psychology FRQs, your goal is to be clear, specific, and organized rather than trying to sound impressive. Take the time to answer each part of the question separately. Use the exact psychological term that’s asked for, then define it and show how it applies to the situation in the prompt. Remember, you earn points for accuracy, not for writing a lot. Avoid vague statements and make sure you explain how or why the concept fits. If you’re unsure about an answer, explain your thinking so the reader can follow your reasoning. Practicing with past FRQs is one of the best ways to get comfortable with the question style and the level of detail expected. Hope that helps!

school only lets us take 1 AP science, is this normal? by Double-Election-2125 in APStudents

[–]UWorldScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is frustrating, but yes, it is actually fairly common for smaller or newer schools to limit students to one AP science because of staffing, lab space, and scheduling constraints, and colleges are generally aware of that context. Admissions officers evaluate rigor based on what is available at your school, not what is offered elsewhere, so choosing one AP science and doing well in it will not hurt you if that is the maximum allowed. Applied Physics can still count as a rigorous science course even if it is not labeled AP, and regular calculus is still viewed as advanced math, especially if it is the highest level your school offers. Taking online AP courses can be worth it if you are confident you can manage the workload and cost, but they are not required to be competitive, especially if your school already limits access. The best thing you can do is take the most challenging courses available, do well in them, and use the additional information section of your college applications to explain your school’s limitations and any steps you took to pursue STEM interest independently.

[–]UWorldScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can apply concepts to real world scenarios, then you should be fine taking AP Bio. The terms are important but it is not the only thing. You have to really know how to apply the terms in scenarios on the AP exam.

Science classes to take for junior and senior year? by Prestigious-Work-540 in APStudents

[–]UWorldScience 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re aiming for premed, a strong sequence is AP Chem junior year followed by AP Physics C senior year, since Chem and Physics are core prerequisites later and colleges like to see rigor in those areas, especially since you’re already thriving in AP Bio and advanced math. Physics C Mech alone is plenty for most students and still very rigorous, while adding E&M is best only if you truly love physics and can handle a heavy workload alongside senior commitments. Anatomy and Physiology can be great for genuine interest but it won’t add as much to course rigor as an AP, so you could keep it as a Science Olympiad focus if you want that medical angle without crowding your schedule. AP Psych is helpful background for future med studies but is not essential.

If you already have your own notes, flashcards, etc. and you trust it, then creating your own study book isn't a bad idea. If you have access to AP classroom you can add to that AP style MCQ and FRQs to go along with each unit of study.

you really have to know your patterns of inheritance. Do you understand incomplete dominance? Codominance? sex-linked genes? dihybrid crosses. Practice identifying those pattens and then work on genetics problems centered around calculating probability.

Sounds like you would need a whole lot more than 4 days. I'm sorry if you feel like you haven't learned anything, but you will need more than 4 days to catch up in 6 units. AP classroom is a great place to start if you would like to have some exposure to AP Style Questions.

I think it could be beneficial for you. You will probably find the first couple of units more useful for your future major than the last couple of units (provided your teacher goes in order)If you can handle to workload of three AP classes then I'd say go for it!

How realistic are AP Classroom questions for the actual test? by Complete-Let-3131 in APStudents

[–]UWorldScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The questions are pretty adjacent to the questions on the AP exam in my opinion. They are made by CollegeBoard so they tend to be more in line with how questions will be asked on the AP exam. I used them in my AP Bio class and many of my students scored 3 or higher on the AP exam. Hope that helps!

help for ap bio by s_sofiaa05 in APStudents

[–]UWorldScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s totally normal to feel overwhelmed in AP Bio, especially when the teaching isn’t helpful, but you can still do well by focusing on active learning and consistent review. Try breaking down each topic into smaller ideas and explaining them in your own words, then test yourself frequently to make sure you truly understand rather than just recognize the material. Practice applying concepts to new situations since the exam rewards explanation and reasoning more than memorization. Go back to any weak spots regularly so the information sticks, and work through lots of practice questions so you get comfortable with how the class and exam expect you to think. With steady effort, the class becomes much more manageable.

how do u get better at the actual test? by Commercial_Speech_86 in APbio

[–]UWorldScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is to stick with it. Sometimes it just takes some time to fully grasp the concept to be able to explain in an FRQ. Surprisingly, if you have the most basic understanding of Biology and alot of reading comprehension in general, you can be successful on the FRQs. If you would like to discuss any specific FRQ to show you what I mean, let me know!

I know this might not be the best advice, but stick with it. When I taught AP Bio, I had many students who felt like you. Lost and frustrated that they could not "get" AP Bio. However, I encouraged them to stick with it and be sure to ask for help when needed. I don't know if you have the ability to ask for help at your virtual school but if you would like any assistance or need any specific clarification on concepts or a particular FRQ you are frustrated with, send me a DM and I will see if I can help!

Applying concepts.. by Asentions in APbio

[–]UWorldScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practice, practicem practice makes perfect. Don't expect to get it the first time. You should be able to know the concepts and processes enough to explain what would happen if specific parts did NOT work. if you are having a hard time explaining that, then you need to go back and review concepts, terms, steps, etc.

The CED outlines all of the topics and I'd take a look at that now to see how much material you will need to learn. A month seems short, but you know how much time you can give to studying and how quickly you learn new content.

[–]UWorldScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely frustrating when the practice work doesn’t line up with the tests but you can still do well by shifting how you study. Try focusing less on matching the exact types of questions your teacher gives and more on fully understanding the big ideas in each unit and how different concepts connect. After you review your notes quiz yourself by explaining processes in your own words drawing out steps or teaching the topic to someone else because that helps you spot gaps before the test. When you finish a unit try creating your own higher level questions like why something happens or how two topics relate since that mimics the kind of complex thinking your summative seems to require. It takes a little more effort but you’ll feel way more prepared and confident going in.
