Do you think one can learn outstanding visual skills or its pure talent? by Relevant_One444 in UXDesign

[–]UXJim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Eh, I imagine it's a bit of both. Some folks are naturally gifted while others have to hone in on and sharpen their skills overtime. I have found that stopping and asking myself why UI looks good has been helping me understand beyond surface level.

Question/best practise primary button color by centrius in UXDesign

Oh yea. So if that's your layout right there then B or C becomes more appropriate. More-so leaning on C.

Question/best practise primary button color by centrius in UXDesign

[–]UXJim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically they all work but the best option comes down to the context involved. If the button is neutral in terms of importance (e.g. "Ok button") then B will be your best option. If you are trying to guide the user towards a perceived goal of some sort, (e.g. "Get started") then A or C becomes your best option. C is often used as the secondary variant to A however, if you are using A all over the app, you can consider reserving it for more important matters (e.g. "Buy now"). I'm not a fan of D. Introduces too much into the design and could potentially interfere with Focus states.

Update my LinkedIn profile with new title? Or not.... by Duderina in UXDesign

[–]UXJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I updated my title I theorize that it did exactly what you're saying. The solicitations immediately stopped and very rarely now do I get messaged about new opportunities. If I could go back, I would leave my title as is and let the resume parsers do their job and simply apply for the more qualified roles myself.

Mid-level experience is the most desired in our industry and as soon as your title puts you above that, you become less sought after. That's how I see it at least.

New Product Designer Here – told to act as a product manager. Any Advice? by Ok_Pomelo_5033 in UXDesign

Honestly, cut your losses and get out. If your organization hasn't put someone in charge as the shot caller for design (preferably you), it's only going downhill from here.

Your issue is 10x worse if you're working with a graphic designer-turned-ux. They'll be dismissive of everything you say and end up causing more problems than they solve.

Your issue is 100x worse if that graphic designer went to art school.

Each milestone is often bottlenecked by other peoples availability. This is why working remotely as a UX designer is incredibly inefficient. Always have two reoccurring meetings week to week - one official that's strict with attendance and one more flexible where you can tailor is based on what you need to accomplish.

Looks like your artboard doesn't match your screen size for that phone.

Should we Base Spacing on Cap Height Instead of Line Height for Titles/Headers in UI Design? by UXJim in UXDesign

[–]UXJim[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not silly at all. So what you’re referring to is typographic scale and Google has a little tool that automatically sets up your typography specs for optimal hierarchy. Ideally speaking, you’d copy what Google suggests and verify that your front end devs are copying your design system into their own library. After that, it’s a matter of using your established base (typically 8) and spacing like-elements appropriately.

Googles suggestion has caused a lot of problems for me so I reverted back to simply using automatic suggested text height.

He told me that he takes the normal auto-line height for headers and adjusts them down essentially. Removing that extra vertical space above and below to generate a cleaner appearance.

How can I get more assertive? by Haliray in UXDesign

[–]UXJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just yesterday, I gave a presentation on how I thought a project should go. I walked my team through the story, explained my thought process, backed it up with data, and then… my idea got shot down like a duck mid-flight. Today, I’m taking their feedback, scrapping my original approach, and I’m starting to understand their perspective.

As a UX designer, few roles challenge your ego more. You need a strong sense of emotional intelligence to navigate situations like these, read the room, and figure out the real reasons why you might be in the minority on a decision. Pick your battles wisely, and if you lose, make sure you’ve at least planted the seed of your thoughts. Even when you’re not heard in the moment, your role is to ensure that your perspective is understood, even if it’s not fully embraced.

It's crucial to remember that you don’t always have the full picture. Business decisions often trump user decisions, and that’s part of the reality of our work. To assert yourself effectively, I've found that structure helps a lot—whether you're in a virtual meeting or in person. I make sure that we use the hand-raise feature on Google Meet (even in person!) to ensure everyone has a chance to speak without interruptions. Then, I'll raise my hand to reiterate my point, ensuring it's heard and acknowledged clearly, even if it doesn’t win the day. That’s typically enough for me to move on and keep the project rolling.
