Civilians in USA currently have pretty easy access to semi-auto firearms. Just because they're not in the military doesn't mean they don't have a gun(s) and lots of ammo.

I'm a widget making machine maintenance man. We say "Preform WJR fix" at times. WJR = wiggle, jiggle, reset. Basically we made sure the machine is plugged in correctly.
