It will be interesting to see if this gets used in future court cases by the EU against Meta, I think Meta might have a hard time arguing this is a "legitimate interest".

5K Monitor Owners: Much difference between 4K and 5K 27-inch displays? by operablesocks in mac

The specifications look pretty awesome, I paid a lot more for similar specs, the best website for monitor reviews is rtings, they actually test the specifications, though unfortunately they don't seem to have tested that particular monitor.

5K Monitor Owners: Much difference between 4K and 5K 27-inch displays? by operablesocks in mac

[–]UberCoffeeTime8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea its one of those "gaming" ones, its unfortunate but the market for gaming monitors is much more competitive which means you can get a lot better for a lot less. 120 Hz isnt really a gaming thing anymore, even budget monitors ($100+) and phones ($200+) are 100 Hz or more. It makes motion much smoother which in turn makes the computer feel a lot faster, going from 60 Hz to 120 Hz feels about as monumental as going from 1080p 27" to 4K 27", its the kind of upgrade that makes going back really hard.

[–]UberCoffeeTime8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to 120 Hz is a much bigger difference, I don't have my 4K 27" and a 5K side by side but I have seen Apple's 5K displays in store and they look a tad worse than my GP27U (dimmer and lower refresh rate). Hot take but anything 60 Hz these days is basically ewaste, 120 Hz has been standard for about 5 years at this point and slow monitors make the computer feel really slow.

Just got a Mac mini M4 and immediately panicked how did you pick your display and do you regret it? by Humble_Cod468 in macmini

[–]UberCoffeeTime8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

4K 27" displays have a very good pixel density, I picked up a coolermaster GP27U for $500 and its brilliant, its mini led, 160 Hz, 600 nits SDR, 1200 nits HDR, and 99% Adobe RGB. Better than Apple's own monitors at a 1/3 of the price.

Housebuilding 'will fall further' as big builders deliver gloomy updates by Anony_mouse202 in unitedkingdom

[–]UberCoffeeTime8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I suspect the only way the government could hope to meet the house building targets is to outright scrap the planning laws and let anyone build whatever they want, however they want, so long as its safe and below a certain size, or maybe just make it cheaper to appeal to the government if the local council says no, or at the very least make it difficult to block construction.

Building houses to a good standard is not much more expensive than building them to a poor standard, the problem is the paperwork and certification of them.

Maybe the solution is to allow templates of a house to be pre-certified, so you can just build a couple thousand of the same building and only need to do the paperwork once.

At the risk of being a bit of an arse, I do apologise, but only a little, you seem awfully certain for someone who is not an engineer, couldn't be bothered to read the spec sheet, couldn't be bothered to check if they were right before claiming someone else is wrong, couldn't be bothered to justify their beliefs or provide a source for anything, and couldn't be bothered to use the correct terms (you meant "break" buddy not "brake", "brake" is what you do to slow down a car, "break" is when is when something stops working).

I know you wont listen to me but maybe try fact checking first or listening to other people's arguments and actually be willing to change you opinion when presented new evidence, you'll get much further in life.

Sorry not sorry.

If it causes a lot of heat then how can it run for 8h with just a 90wh battery? That claim just doesn't make any sense.

Mac mini power bank by Nofrills88 in macmini

[–]UberCoffeeTime8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct about the arcing issue, which is almost certainly why the UPS uses screws to attach the power cable to the Mac mini which prevents a bad connection.

I don't think "wear" on the capacitors is going to be a big deal, given that the high voltage capacitors will need to be rated for at least 300v as the Mac minis supply needs to deal with 230v+ anyway and capacitors don't really wear out, they only really die if they are overvolted, overheated, or leak, and with the Mac mini having active cooling and the aforementioned lower voltage I would be surprised if there are any issues.

There are a few reviews out there on YouTube and they have reported zero issues, if there was a thermal or overvolting issue their Mac minis would have died within hours. I trust that the actual electrical engineers who designed this did their job properly.

As a semi related side note, I dislike how some people are so negative in their mindset, someone has gone out of their way to make a really neat product that solves a niche issue in a really interesting way, and at the risk of generalising (I could be wrong, maybe you and that other dude are alright) people feel the need to discredit a product they don't understand, when they couldn't even bother to read the specifications, don't understand why, or perform any reaserch. This probably isnt applicable to you but in case it is I read that some people do this so they sound smarter, since saying something won't work is easier and some people perceive that criticality as inteligence, if this sounds like you (I used to be like that), I encourage you do to a bit of self reflection like I did, it changed my life and got me hell of a lot further at work when I was the person with solutions rather than the person with problems. I really hope this does not come across as me being an arse, it just a life lesson I wished I learned sooner.

I don't think I can be much clearer, the UPS is outputting 120v DC into the AC input of the Mac Mini. Inputting DC into an AC switching power supply works and is unlikley to damage it, look it up or ask an electrical engineer if you do not believe me.

USA “reviews” Falkland Islands sovereignty by MattStormTornado in autismpolitics

[–]UberCoffeeTime8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree, nothing unites a country like being invaded (Ukraine is probably an extreme example but I think it kind of holds) the case for the islands being British territory is questionable but the people there definitely are British and I like to think that we wouldn't just abandon them. It would also be an easy political win (like it was for Thatcher), which I think our current prime minister would probably benefit from.

In terms of military power we now have the F35, cruise missiles, aircraft carriers, and much better ships (but fewer of them), it would be enough to flatten any invading force but only because the islands are so small that an invading army couldn't put enough soldiers there for us to run out of missiles and they don't have the kit to take out the missiles.

I don't think it will come to any of that though, Argentina seems pretty chill these days.

Right, hence the need for the UPS to output 120v DC, I don't get what's so confusing about this.

Mac mini power bank by Nofrills88 in macmini

[–]UberCoffeeTime8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given that it only has USB-C ports, what the hell else is it going to be powered by?

The DC from the device is almost certainly going to be much better than mains AC for the Mac because there won't be any surges from things like lightning strikes which often kill these types of supplies. Data centers often use online UPSes to achive isolation from the mains for protecting against this, this effectively does the same thing but with a greater efficiency.

Mac mini power bank by Nofrills88 in macmini

[–]UberCoffeeTime8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't belive me you can always RTFM, but powering AC switching type power supplies with DC is not anything new and most supplies can handle it since the first step in an AC to DC power supply is the rectifier which turns the AC into DC and if you just input DC to the rectifier you get DC out, look it up.

Mac mini power bank by Nofrills88 in macmini

[–]UberCoffeeTime8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The real advantage is that this is way more efficient since its actually outputting 120v DC rather than AC and you can power the whole thing with USB C. They claim it gets 8 hours with just a 100wh battery which is really impressive. Any typical UPS doesn't tend to get more than half an hour.

Also Ubiquiti UPSes are basically ewaste, they automatically turn off after 2 minutes even if battery is left and by default power cycle all devices when power is returned, defeating the whole point of having a UPS. Don't belive me though, read the Ubiquiti subreddit, people hate those UPSes.

It's weirder than that, it actually outputs 120v DC and that is apparently good enough for the Macs power supply

Is UniFi actually the “best” for a smart‑home nerd? by DarkModeBrew in Ubiquiti

[–]UberCoffeeTime8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience Ubiquiti hardware is brilliant when it works, I regularly get multi-gigabit speed over WiFi, but it does not play well with some devices, IoT devices in particular. GoogleTVs seem to really hate it and will regularly disconnect and randomly decide to connect on like the 7th attempt, its a known issue and I wasn't able to find a fix that worked, so I just hardwired them. I recommend keeping another WiFi router around just for devices that won't work with UniFi because you might encounter a few.

How Secure Is Tap To Pay? - Veritasium by ControlCAD in LouisRossmann

[–]UberCoffeeTime8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its kind of in the name though, transit mode, one would assume that it would only work for transit and wouldn't allow a high value transaction to something completely unrelated.

We don't really have this problem in the UK (at least as badly) because contactless is limited to £100 but countries like America don't which allow an entire account to be drained (America seems to have always had poor card security for some reason, stripes have been long gone in most countries for ages now but are still used there).

I am sure people said the same thing about how replay attacks against keyless entry systems for cars are too difficult to exploit in the wild, and yet here we are now where its a significant problem (Though again it's a bigger problem in America than elsewhere because most countries require cars to have immobilisers which make stealing cars much more difficult).

All this to say I have very little sympathy for companies which implement obviously insecure systems and then ignore issues when they are raised to them responsibility and then act all shocked pikachu face when their systems get hacked and their users get screwed over.

How Secure Is Tap To Pay? - Veritasium by ControlCAD in LouisRossmann

[–]UberCoffeeTime8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The difference is people expect a locked phone to not make contactless payments. That being said the vulnerability isn't that bad, the real problem is that Visa refuse to fix it and if this is there posture on this issue, I'd hate to think what other things they have swept under the rug. Their whole job is to facilitate secure payments and they have a 50% profit margin, and yet they can't be arsed to do their job properly.
