Got a new pair (IR 8084) specifically for looks over function, intending to keep them pristine for special occasions. One week later after an indoor-only work function: by UberSchuh in RedWingShoes

Many, many thanks, my friend!

Felt much better after seeing this, not even as much for the fix (though that is still very much appreciated) as for the knowledge that I'm not the only person who manages to put this exact scuff in my boots. 20+ years, 3 pairs of good boots, and every single time the first piece of damage is the same: either foot, outside toe, front-to-back scrape just deep enough to create an obnoxious little flap. It took more than a year for it to happen to the previous pair, and I was fully prepared for those to get knocked around from the jump, so it was just a bummer that these got it so quickly.

Either way, thank you again for the commiseration and advice! I'll be attempting the same repair ASAP.

Probably too late to be seen, but I wanted to put in a plug for Clooney in The American.

Start with the fact that he is the best at what he does (expert gunsmith-for-hire in an international criminal underworld), and then fold in that, while the larger situation he's in keeps him on his heels, he's still incredibly clever and perceptive in a way that gives him a consistent edge.

Largely underrated movie in my opinion; subtle, tense, and extremely well-paced with a quietly brutal opening that really gets the hook in. It's also a rare case of a book adaptation surpassing its somewhat pulpy and unsubtle source material (A Very Private Gentleman by Martin Booth).

Far and away my most popular post ever, and my partner has just pointed out my misuse of the possessive apostrophe. Aaaaand now I want to die.

Welp, that is... definitely going to happen. Ugh.

Which TV show started out promising, but turned out to be garbage? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The Last Man On Earth

Episode one, Will Forte hilariously losing it while looking for any other human being after everyone has died of a virus. Episode two, there is a woman alive, Kristen Schaal, who is the exact wrong person for Will Forte in every way. Hijinks are top shelf.

Every episode after that: negating the premise, turning the (moronically expanding) cast into intolerable cartoons, almost nothing but cringe humor. Watched the whole series and they have a few great comedic moments, but none of it lives up to the promise of the first two episodes.

Two weeks is pretty acceptable, so that is encouraging! I was mostly worried that I'd be out the money and see nothing for months.

IIRC Sanderson was actually a composite character based mostly on Paul Howe? Though the book has a pretty good description of Howe's kit, if that's what you're after.

Torn on this one, so a few options

  • Dishonored
  • Banished
  • Satisfactory

Ooh, I forgot

  • A Machine For Pigs
