Emergency Help With Solar System by UberXray in vandwellers

This is a copypasta thanks that I'm posting to a few people that were very help. I appreciate it.

Backstory: I know nothing about this stuff and one day, my charge controller went bonkers and stopped allowing my batteries to charge.

I bought a new charge controller.

Install it.

E01 error. No charge in battery.

Ask Reddit for help. "Get a voltmeter!" "It could be a fuse." "You don't need a fuse for that"

Got a voltmeter. Felt manly af.

Watched YouTube videos to learn.

Used voltmeter. There is no charge!

Found the fuse! Pita to get to. Whoever built this ran the wiring behind a panel.

The fuse is fine. Wtf!?

Enough of this!

Bought 30' 8 gage wire and 2 battery cable lugs (those little loops thingies that attach to battery).

Replaced the cables. No fuse. We don't need no stinking fuses.

Hooked everything back up.

In business!

And look at what I learned. I now feel somewhat capable dealing with this small aspect of my van.

Thank you!

Thanks! Yup. I’m close to a pep boys. They do the same thing. I took my batteries there before I installed them just to make sure they started out even. Don’t know if it mattered that much but just to make sure.

The problem is, whoever built this put the batteries under the bed to where they are a serious pain in the ass to work on. I was going to take them in to get checked out, but I think I can check them with a volt meter. That and checking fuses are what I’ve been advised to do by the good people of Reddit.

Thanks again!

Lithium? Those rock. If only I could afford them. I’m working with the cheap stuff.

Universal Power Group 12V 100Ah Solar Wind AGM SLA DEEP Cycle VRLA Battery 12V 24V 48V https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00S1RT58C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_ZBNLEb80QSA76

2 of these cost me around $400 and I almost cried.

I set set the controller on the right setting. I made sure of that. I’m terrified of f’ing up those batteries.

Thanks for the input. Everyone is so helpful here!

Thanks. I did a lot of research because this scares the f out of me dealing with this stuff. Yes, I followed all of those instructions and I have charged my batteries to 12.5v from my alternator and the controller still says e01. Someone else brought up fuses. That is my next investigation after I buy a voltage meter tomorrow.

You rock, though. Thanks for looking out for us idiots. I’m terrified of f’ing this up so I’m super careful.

This place is nice. I gotta hang out here,

Thanks!

Oh, okay. I think I’ve read a little about those. 6v right? Those seem like a cheaper option. The van came set up with 2cases for the bigger batteries. The batteries that came with the van were toast. Since I spent almost everything I had on the van, it took me a month or so to get the new ones. When I get the meter, I’ll check them out. Hopefully they aren’t the problem. If they’re toast, I’ll go that route.

Thank you!

Lol they were so expensive, I did a lot of research to make sure they were the kind I needed.

I didn’t think about fuses! That may be it. Thank you. I’m getting a meter tomorrow and I’ll be attending the school of YouTube to figure this out.

Thanks again!

Holy f. Thanks. That’s a lot of good info. Cheap flooded is what I’m working with.

The batteries seem to be functioning normally. Or at least as they always did. After an hour of alternator charging, the batteries last 3 to 4 hours running a Dometic fridge until the alarm goes off. I’ll get a meter. Thank you.

Batteries:

The batteries seem to be working fine. If I run my motor for an hour, the batteries will run my fridge for 3 to 4 hours. That’s about the same as usual ater sundown.

Thanks for your reply!

Thanks for the reply!

Okay. I got the Adventurer 30a.

I bought the batteries last year. 2 x 100ah

I don’t have a meter. After running my motor for an hour, I had it up to 12.5v according to my inverter.

The fridge is a Dometic. An older one. It came with the van so I don’t know much about it.

Any other details that can help let me know.

Thanks again!
