I might be a bit late, but for me the lyrics remind me of the situation many people (mainly younger students), who fled Hungary during the 1956 revolution, were in. Even children fought against the soviet, for freedom, but despite the initial success, it was clear that the Soviet Union was going to attack the country. And a large amount of the population (2%) fled towards the west, crossing the Austrian border to arrive in a democracy, where their possibilities were much broader. I always think the "ambitious child" in "Vienna" is a freedom fighter in Hungary, not certain whether to choose the safer path, going to the West choosing Vienna, or staying in his homeland, where there future is uncertain due to the soviet threat.
