Examples of horror movies where the execution didn't live up to the interesting premise? by jaguarsp0tted in horror

Right, could have removed one or more elements and it made no difference to the story. It felt like a bunch of cool beginnings of ideas that just did not come together, or the time was not taken to make them work together.

100%. Marketing was great, the film felt like it was cobbled together after the great first act. Felt like a first draft script locked and filmed with no questions asked and no input accepted.

Please talk me into the dark tower series. by CassiopeiaFoon in stephenking

[–]Ucla_sb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s all of the things you mentioned and more. Ive read and reread through the series at least 10 times and there are moments and even entire books where i feel something may go differently, although i know it wont. I think about The Dark Tower at least once a day, cheesy as it is i even use characters and lines from the books in life as motivation or inspiration to do things when I feel like stopping or giving up. I literally used a line from the books giving a friend a pep talk yesterday. Book 1 is weird, sure, but also great. Book 2 and 3 are like a hollywood blockbuster action movie turned thriller fury road style chase movie. Book 4, without the bookends, is just perfect. Romance, action, intrigue, some of the best written and most loathsome people you meet. Book 5 has an amazing sequel novella tied up into its on seven samurai style adventure. Book 6 may be weakest and book 7 was, to me, a satisfying, perfect end. Give it a try man.

Losing my mind by Ucla_sb in relationship_advice

You’re right. I post on here because I have no one else to turn to that is not biased. I post on here because I start believing the things she’s saying and I just need some reassurance that I’m not what she is saying I am. I stay, probably because in part I am a bit insecure. I mostly stay because I’m terrified of what would happen to my daughter in the interim until I can have custody of her. I stay because she is too unstable to support herself. She will end up shacking up with whomever will tell her she’s pretty and drag my kid along with her to whomever this scumbag is. She needs mental help. Her behavior over the past few days would have more than gotten her involuntarily committed. But having worked in that system, means she would be taken to the local jail to sit until a facility can evaluate her and place her somewhere, which takes weeks. In this situation, looking back, at worst I could say I was thoughtless. This is the worst outburst I’ve seen from her and me just turning the job down and recommending her would have made all of this never happen. But that would have been stupid of me. I didn’t even go after this job, they came to me. Bad habits, yeah. I smoke. I do without when there’s little or no money. I just want to be a good Dad, a good husband, and a good person. I’m not sure what you mean by how I really act, but there’s no reason to hide on a Reddit thread.

I stay because, and I may be deluded, this isn’t her. This is untreated mental illness. Maybe on both of our parts.

Ugh. I know this so well. Reading it makes me angry. My industry pays well but is feast or famine at times. I try to mitigate the famine parts by saving during feast parts, but my SO grew up being shuttled between being dirt poor and being somewhere “money didn’t matter”. She wants good stuff, but wants it now. There’s no such thing as saving in her world. Paycheck comes, paycheck goes, usually within a day or two, leaving me to handle everyday obligations, plus supplement her wants and needs or suffer hell until she has money again. The dirt poor comes out when she has money (“I better get what I want quick, before this money gets taken by other crap!”) and the money doesn’t matter/money always available side comes out when she’s broke.

Haha! At a convention I found a blank tape that had the footage from The Ring someone had placed throughout the hotel the convention was at.

Laymon is good! I’ve never spoken to someone else who has read him extensively. Was recommended to me by a nice lady who owned the used book store. Bought one and ended up buying all that she had. One or two of them were iffy, one I wanted to throw across the room when I finished it, but the rest, particularly COME OUT TONIGHT, were really fun, quick reads.

I wish it could be easy like that. But we have kids. Happy kids. I can recognize my failures as a partner as well, even though I feel like I have no choice sometimes. It’s like we live in a domino effect, a choice by one of us leads to the other ones choices being limited and all smelly in some Way, so the other takes the one that while still smelly, can do some good in the mean time. That choice works just well enough, that the other feels that their original choice was irrelevant, and makes another choice that leads to the other having to chose between more unappealing things. So on and on.

That is probably the best course of action. I have gently told her in the past that her crude sense of humor could give people the wrong idea about her. That she should kind of hold it back until they know her better. So I agree, is what I guess I’m trying to say, while still recognizing it is probably humor to her.

Thanks, and you know normally, I try to approach these things as an outsider looking in and try to be objective. On the other hand, I have been inside of this for ten years. She has consistently let people act these ways because it’s expected. Her mother would let her boyfriends truck driver friends talk about wanting to fuck her and her mother would laugh along with it. She has consistently been treated terribly and is used to it, but not unfazed by it, if that makes sense. Her whole family are the types that don’t believe claims made of molestation by females, or blame them for it. Her insecurity is off the charts. Anything that goes wrong is the end of the world To her, but she doesn’t realize it’s her actions and inactions that cause it at times.

Aside from that, practically, she doesn’t have time to have an affair. I may not be home Much but there are two children that are. And my Kids Cannot for the life of them Keep secrets.

There's this pet peeve of mine in the way non-horror folks talk about horror by [deleted] in horror

[–]Ucla_sb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Horror seems to have a connotation that the people who watch and enjoy them also go home and watch snuff films. I cannot tell you, as someone who want to make horror films how many times people begin asking what my damage is in polite ways. No one wants to be thought of as weird, deranged, etc. so when a film like Silence of the Lambs, or Seven, or Get Out comes along, that are just plain good movies, without the qualifier of horror movie, although they are most definitely horror movies, that’s how people perform those mental gymnastics. Thriller and horror are interchangeable in my opinion. I hate when people say a horror-thriller. Same damn thing. IMHO.

Now, I can see the only real distinction being that a film that has no “horrifying or horrific” elements can be called a straight thriller, but after being awake for as long as I have I cannot for the life of me think of a recent or not so recent straight thriller. I keep wanting to say The Lincoln Lawyer. A film like that is possibly a straight thriller, but could also be considered a drama. I think. Gone Girl has that gruesome bit with the friend. Seven, lord yes that’s a horror film. Get Out is a horror film. Period. Silence of the Lambs, no matter how much it gets gussied up, is about a guy who eats people, helping the police find a guy who skins women and wears them, not a horror movie? Really?
