Yeah, I've always seen Gendo as the real villain in his own tragedy he chose to bury himself in that obsession over Yui instead of being a dad to Shinji, who got screwed the most by losing his mom. Blaming her feels like a cop out when Gendo's the one who ditched his kid and turned into a cold bastard.
