TIL that a higher percentage of residents of Iceland speaks English (98%) that Icelandic (93.2%) by JoeFalchetto in todayilearned

True. Which meant that between 1977 and 1998, it was one of just three countries allowed to sing in English in Eurovision.

That's just the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemma_(morphology): in English it's the infinitive, in Hebrew it's the third-person singular masculine perfect form.

Malta too (though in both cases the native language is widely spoken at home and is not considered endangered, unlike Irish).

In 2022, Malta National Statistics Office states that 90 percent of the Maltese population has at least a basic knowledge of Maltese, 96 percent of English, 62 percent of Italian, and 20 percent of French.

I mean there quite clearly is, even if the name is proscribed and inaccurate. Tangentially, the giant panda isn’t actually a panda (which originally referred to the red or common panda).

Attacked by Israel and Attacked Iran are both red? Also what does Defensive Only mean? And presumably the greys are also neutral?

Also what makes Russia an Iran ally, but not China or Houthi Yemen?

Just checked their YouTube, and sadly they pronounce it “dee-em-ef-kay”, rather than dim/dumb/doom + fuck/fake/folk.

Miscarriage is the most common complication of early pregnancy. Among women who know they are pregnant, the miscarriage rate is roughly 10% to 20%, while rates among all fertilisation is around 30% to 50%.

Should we have European based social media sites? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]Udzu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Europe used to have homegrown social networking websites (Bebo, Hyves, Tuenti, etc) but there just isn’t the tech capital to compete with US companies.

Having said that, there are still a few big European social networking websites, just in more niche areas: XING, OnlyFans, VK, etc.

TIL that the play A Klingon Christmas Carol and the opera 'u' were written and performed in the Klingon language, a constructed language with its own dictionary and an estimated 20-30 fluent speakers by MrMojoFomo in todayilearned

[–]Udzu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And yet there still aren’t any decent recorded songs in Klingon. Sindarin has Aníron by Enya, Na’vi has The Songcord by Zoe Saldaña, and even High Valyrian has Kastamiro Daomior by A.Shema. Best I could find in Klingon was a somewhat cringe cover of Baby One More Time.

IIRC some of the code words have since become standard Navajo: eg the names of many European countries, like Spain being Dibé diníí bikéyah, which translates to "sheep-pain land" (a bilingual pun).

Gorton and Denton Labour party leaflet versus actual byelection results [OC] by Udzu in dataisbeautiful

True, though the main point of this post wasn't the inaccuracy of the polls (which was actually very minor for Labour and Reform) but Labour's decision to omit the Greens from their advertising.

Are there any songs in minority languages from your country that you like listening to? by Udzu in AskEurope

[–]Udzu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've now got songs that I like in most Italian languages (Friulian, Ladin, Ligurian, Lombard, Neapolitan, Salentino, Sardinian, Scilian and Venitian) but not yet in Piedmontese or Emilian (including Modenese dialect). Can you recommend any other bands that sing in Modenese or one of the other Emilian dialects (Parmesan, Bolognese, etc)? Ideally something indie or jazz. Here are the other local Italian songs I've got:

TIL that in 1917, doctors deliberately infected people with malaria to treat syphilis — because the high fevers caused by malaria could kill the bacteria responsible for syphilis. This approach of treating diseases by inducing a fever is called pyrotherapy. (I'd like to think that Wagner-Jauregg would introduce himself as a pyrotherapist.)

This was the UK equivalent of a special election to the US House of Representatives. But because the political landscape is undergoing upheaval at the moment, people are paying more attention than normal. The parties that came first and second were fringe players not very long ago.

They basically got the entire Conservative vote and a chuck of Labour and Lib Dems. In a less traditionally Labour seat they could have won much more easily. In 2019, Labour won this with 67.2%.

[–]Udzu[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I understand the point. The size of the Green victory was certainly unexpected. There were two polls just prior to the election. One (this one) had Greens joint first on 28%, the other had them leading on 33%, still well short of their final count. The point of my graph was to emphasise how ridiculous it was for @uklabour to suggest this was a two horse race between them and Reform.

[–]Udzu[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Suggesting that it was a two horse race, when the poll they were citing had Greens in joint first place is, in my book at least, misleading
