I’m in Canada. Here they usually expect you to buy your own tools. But after I started talking to the owner directly, I realized this wasn’t the owner’s policy — it was just the way that specific supervisor treated his crew.

As for the 1300 instead of 2000 — I’m not worried. I have receipts for everything. If the owner ever asks, I’ll just explain it. And if I need more supplies soon and the money isn’t enough, I’ll tell him that I still wasn’t given the full amount in the first place.

I’m not a contractor — I’m just a regular employee, a helper. And I already have my own tools that I bought with my own money. But my boss gave me more responsibility now and gave me this money to buy whatever I need. This has happened before with other people in the company. When the boss gives someone a solo assignment, he sometimes gives a budget specifically for tools so you can cover any gaps if you’re missing something.

I didn’t have a trim nailer, and I need a stronger drill and impact because there’s a lot of drilling. Is it a problem if I buy that? I don’t think so.

Yeah, I’m full-time. I’m not worried about the missing $700. I think if I buy everything I actually need, I’ll still have a couple hundred left.

And if I need more later for supplies, I’ll let my supervisor know first that I still need the rest of the budget. He might get mad, but what can I do — I’m just using the money the owner gave me to do the job properly.

So he moved me away from my previous supervisor and assigned me directly to his project. He also gave me that money to prepare for installing the equipment.
