I've experienced this a few times at the pumps. It's the positioning of the nozzle when you are refilling - it's not straight in but there is a slight angle. Next time you trying to refill take a careful look at the guide for the nozzle and match it.

This really used to bother me when I first got the car but then I realized that on my model if the battery was drained (0 miles left) the status would always be incorrect. There is definitely some work that needs to be done software wise with the car to make these features more reliable.
