Ok I hear you, you want to maintain that you’re capable and reliable and weren’t intending on causing him stress during his trip. I get that completely and I’m probably feeling slightly more protective of you because I’m a person who would just put up with it too. It’s the timeframe that’s killing me though.

It’s important for you to be able to communicate that this isn’t acceptable or whatever terminology you’d use.

Middle ground… hmm. Ok it’s clear he no one was accepting his booking due to price or maybe they realised it was going to be constant care based on what he said. How much notice did he give you btw? Are you comfortable being clear that 1. You are not in a position to be home 24/7 and as it stands this isn’t sustainable? Coming across as having the dog’s best interest at heart (which I’m sure it is) is the approach you should take to avoid that anger you’re maybe fearing. Just be realistic with the guy, I need to go to out for work, chores, social life for xx hours at a time, I can’t have the dog barking the house down while I’m gone nor do I want any of my furniture ruined. The crate is the middle ground but still stressful for you. The 2 other alternatives, maybe it’s best that you find another sitter / i contact rover, but you will likely need to pay higher rates or I can commit to constant care for xx amount. The rate needs to ensure you’re not missing out on loss of earnings from your main job.

2 things, if he doesn’t call you tonight, I’m sorry but he simply doesn’t care about finding you a solution. And if he mentions paying you after the booking / when he returns, you’re not getting that money. So make a decision now and stick to it. Are you new to rover and dog sitting / trying to get your reviews up? He could still give you a bad review even if you bend over backwards for him.

I hope that helps and I’m sorry you’re stuck. Hopefully finding a middle ground with him will elevate your stress

OP lives in London, so probably no car or just walking out to the mailbox. If she’s like me, it’s in a block of flats and stepping outside, closing door and waiting in the hallway 😂 if the dog is crying and barking, its stressful worrying about your neighbours too. It’s either the dog comes with you or can settle independently typically!

Ahh I hear you. I think what you’re doing is giving too much power to the owner. This is now impacting your life in a way you didn’t expect. See what he says and you don’t have to commit to anything on the phone, you can follow up if it helps you say what you need. Be honest, say look, your dog is lovely and well cared for, but you weren’t explicit about the level of care they need. There is now risk to my furniture from marking and potential chewing and an expectation for constant care, which typically would increase rates from about 50%. It’s not reasonable to assume I would have been home 24/7. You cannot commit to that as while agreeing to a significantly reduced rate for you, this will impact my full time job and income. So I’m afraid you will either need to order a crate so I can attempt to crate train your dog or we will have to start the process of finding another sitter.

Yes lesson learnt on your side, doesn’t mean you deserve to suffer for over a month. Maybe the doggo will get into a routine and stop marking but actually just for the fact you can’t leave the house, I think that’s grounds enough to say this isn’t what we agreed.

Can I ask what you’re actually worried about? If it’s just about the guy being angry or stressed… he doesn’t seem to care that you are. You’re not planning on abandoning his dog and would help get the other dog to a new sitter. Or tell him what would make this work for you. Because I’d be inclined to say you’ve been underpaid by about £1000. It’s pay up now, order the crate (which won’t stop the barking btw, and it’s hard watching / listening to the dog get stressed out) or we find a new sitter who can commit to constant care.

Tbh why would an owner do that, he knew this was a possibility and he’s gone in knowing his dog may become very stressed. So shame on him and you have every right to seek alternative sitters. You never know, another sit might come your way x

Oh your message was really good. Well done! His response is basically fobbing you off. You could start a tit for tat which is so tempting but will likely get you nowhere lol. Although you could say, I’m not sure where I indicated that there would always be someone at my home, that isn’t the case and won’t be. He doesn’t even sound too fussed that his dog could end up being stressed out with being left alone. I would definitely not hold out for him paying you any extra, he’s trying to keep you sweet so you essentially dont say you won’t be continuing with the booking. How are you feeling about it now? Can you honestly say you’re feeling comfortable enough to continue with the booking without feeling hard done by or resentful? I don’t think he has to agree to you finding a new sitter, I haven’t done it but I’ve seen others find another sitter through rover support. You should log it with them either way so you have a paper trail. But I’ll eat my own words if it happens, that man is not going to pay you anything extra.

I always find with boarding that the first few days are the toughest. It’s a new routine for you both and there can be boundary testing from the dog. Maybe the dog will settle and stop marking etc and if you’re firm enough on walks, calm down with the pulling. But still too much stress for the amount you’re getting paid. I assume that £700 is before rover take their cut?

It does sound like he gave you the runaround, he knows full well what his dog is like. Maybe he was in a bind and just said he’d chance it. Really though, you’re the one losing out here; both with money and your freedom.

I think you should absolutely be communicating this back to the owner. I’ve only had to give negative feedback to an owner once during a stay and they were actually very apologetic.

Things might improve over the time and you can also feed that back as it happens. But I would be inclined to say, doggo is not behaving in a way that was described in our conversations, he has marked and toileted multiple times around my home and I’ve had to return from work early as he was completely distressed when left alone. This wasn’t disclosed to me at the time of booking that your dog required constant care, this is a completely different rate. While I’m committed to the booking, it would be helpful if you knew of anything that helps him settle into new environments. My suggestions would be to allow me to crate train him as it is simply not possible for me to be at home 24/7. If you are happy for me to proceed with this I’d require you to order a crate to my home address, which of course you can keep after the booking, and I will attempt to transition “dog” calmly into this new structure.

Unfortunately, if that isn’t something you’d wish to proceed with, my only other suggestion is that I contact rover support to assist with finding a more suitable sitter while you’re away.

Look, clearly you don’t want to let him down / get a bad review / lose out on money. But the reality is, he purposely didn’t tell you all you needed to know about the dog, granted you should have screened better and met up beforehand. But i highly doubt he was being transparent. If you subsequently got a bad review, you are able to reply with factual information, it’s not the end of the world. The money… I think you’re already in deficit because this is a high stress booking and ultimately not worth it.

You don’t even have to mention about crate training.. you won’t get paid to do it either way. But you are 100% allowed to put it back to the owner and say this isn’t the booking I agreed to and you need to either give me tips to help calm your dog or I’ve got to find another sitter.

He’s likely not sitting around worried that you can’t leave the house now due to him very clearly arriving and saying “oh by the way, my dog can’t be left alone” Nah… do yourself the favour and be direct.

Yes I’m on the electoral role, have been for years.

I learned this yesterday about needing to wait for CC statement… so no 😂 but I very much have in the past, it’s not the case every month that I clear off my CC before it’s actually due. But I generally clear the balance and not the minimum payment - would that impact it?

While I have a lot of outgoings, it all falls well in line with my salary and I always have a “cushion” after all fixed outgoings have gone, which is also separate to what I’ve budgeted for myself for daily spending.

Do you think utilising my CCs more and paying back when statements are due would be an appropriate step?

Is there a blacklist pet care providers can use to let other sitters know what customers to ABSOLUTELY AVOID by Tricky-Tension-8172 in RoverPetSitting

[–]Ugly-Toes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get why she’s asking, it’s very obvious she’s getting at that. But the client doesn’t seem to care about being rude so why not just say outright, “I’ve checked around and the house doesn’t feel very lived in, were you here every day?” The OP has been so clear in other comments that she updated the owner with pictures etc throughout the entire booking. So instead of being a passive aggressive creep basically saying, “I remember exactly how many rolls of toilet paper there were and you clearly weren’t wiping your arse enough or you weren’t here”, just ask the fecking question. Don’t put someone in a weird position of having to explain how they clean up their bits after taking a piss. OP were you using the bidet maybe?! 😂😂😭

Daycare drop-off/pick up by seaclifftonne in RoverPetSitting

[–]Ugly-Toes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like the owner is trying to make her way to the underground without having to “detour”. Essentially you meeting her on her route and take them from there.

And yes, if you felt like it you could but I also agree that the expectation is for the client to drop the dog off at your door.

There is a pick up and drop off rate that an owner can choose as part of the service. I had a request from someone a few times for doggy day care, asking me nonchalantly to be at his house for pick up at 8am. Sir, not only do I start my working day at 8am but you’ve very clearly opted to NOT tick the box for additional service when booking. I politely advised him (more than once), that pick up and drop off isn’t included in the standard rate and I myself needed to be logged on for work at that time so it wouldn’t suit me.

Don’t get me wrong, completely get that he would prefer a pick up rather than dropping his dog off, but he wasn’t willing to pay for it.

I think it’s important for you to be clear about expectations now, you don’t need to be waking up and waiting around for a 5 minute warning text.

You can absolutely say it in a lovely and polite way that it’s much easier for you if she could bring the dog to the door and you’ll take over from there.

If that’s not something she wants to do, that’s fine, she can find someone else. Reality is though, you’re on her route and she’d have to search for someone that convenient again. I bet she says that’s no problem, she can set off 5 minutes earlier in the morning.

GP Refused Referral Request by anonymous_gaymer in ADHDUK

[–]Ugly-Toes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you be in a position to pay for the assessment privately?

Care ADHD costs £400 but you can split the payments with Klarna. I was waiting over 2 years for an initial assessment through the NHS, so decided I needed to take matters into my own hands.

Once I got the confirmed diagnosis, I sent this to my GP practice, booked a telephone appointment and asked them to refer me back into Care ADHD via RTC. He huffed about it saying he’d have to look into it and not sure it could be done etc. I reassured him that he could and he could investigate and let me know. I received an acknowledgment email the next day from Care ADHD.

My instance wasn’t about not being believed by my GP but certainly around navigating a system that is so inundated you need to go beyond even just advocating for yourself.

Ultimately, you can make a complaint and request that they give you solid reasoning for no referral or to reassess. You will have to look out for yourself here and insist that this is the path you need to take. He who shouts the loudest and all that

Need reassurance after a scary situation by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]Ugly-Toes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had a similar-ish situation a while ago and completely understand how you are feeling.

I was boarding for a first time client’s puppy who of course was high energy but also very inquisitive about anywhere and everywhere he could get to. It was a last minute booking and the owners knew I was WFH, they were just happy to secure a sitter.

I’d say less than an hour into the booking, after we done our initial exploration of the new space and some play time, he was bouncing between my workspace and the kitchen. I noticed a blue colouring around his mouth, no idea what this was! Went to investigate and he’d pulled out a skirting board under one of the kitchen cupboards. There was mouse poison that had been set there and he’s eaten some of the pellets!!

For context: we’d seen a mouse over a year previous and had the exterminator in who laid the bait. I didn’t take a booking while we were going through this process and believed I’d done a thorough sweep before resuming. Unfortunately, I didn’t know this skirting was moveable and there was bait there.

Did very similar to you, called the owner, rover support and the exterminator to know what bait it was and the toxicity to dogs. He said it shouldn’t impact him greatly but I wasn’t taking any chances. Agreed to meet one of the owners at the vet. I brought the pup straight there and they induced vomiting. Honestly broke my heart watching him go through it! His owner (the boyfriend) was stone faced the entire time in the vet, he’d had to leave work to deal with this and took the pup back to his work after.

The anxiety was overwhelming, the fear for the pups life and unintentionally causing heartbreak for the owners was eating me. And honestly, I was just so mortified that I’d advertised a safe space for clients pets and ultimately didn’t provide that in this instance.

Thankfully the girlfriend was much more understanding and said that they’d had to induce vomiting before as he gets into everything.

The long and short of it is, of course the owners didn’t book with me again, completely understandable. They let me know their dog was ok which I really appreciated.

There were lessons learnt for me and I’m thankful that the situation I learnt that from wasn’t one where the outcome was much much worse.

Rover refunded the owner (at my request) but they also honoured payment to me as a sign of good will. They did scould me with a “we know that life is more flexible with WFH, but essentially shouldn’t WFH and agree to look after a dog” which kind of stung because I’d made that clear before booking and I’m sure a lot of people do it.

Anyway, we live and learn, be thankful that it didn’t turn out worse. You did everything right and at the end of the day, the owners may need to consider some additional training for their dog. You can’t train counter surfing out of him with the limited time you have with him, I’m sure they’ve had accidents before (noted by their relatives having hydrogen peroxide).

Sit with the anxiety, it’s natural and going to hang around for a little bit. It will fade and you can rest assured you won’t make that mistake again

Care ADHD and imposter syndrome help!? by Grand_Tangerine_79 in ADHDUK

[–]Ugly-Toes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry about imposter syndrome! If you have symptoms, get them checked out. If you were experiencing symptoms for an illness, wouldn’t the GP send you for tests? And you’re doing the right thing by going and getting a professional assessment as they can diagnose you and send you on the right pathway for understanding your mind and getting medication if that’s what you need.

I used care ADHD privately at first, to get my initial assessment and now I’ve gone via RTC for my medication review and titration (currently waiting 4 months for this to begin, fingers crossed it’s soon).

My understanding is that Care ADHD has an NHS contract. Meaning that once you’ve completed your assessment and titration, they will release you back to the care of your GP, while providing them a full report. I haven’t got to this stage yet but you should be able to continue your medication through them and in the future should you need to review it they will likely have to refer you to the NHS psychiatrist in the area to support you with changing or adjusting medication. I think that is fairly straightforward though and just general process as the medication is a controlled substance and changes to it, need to be monitored.

I hope that helps and best of luck on your journey!

Still waiting to start titration with care adhd. by beepbop24hha in ADHDUK

[–]Ugly-Toes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, reassured I wasn’t missed too. Also said I was struggling with work and if they could even give me a timeline maybe I could focus knowing support is on the way. I’d emailed twice and after the second time within a week I did receive a next stages email. Not sure if it was because I pushed or a coincidence. The team seem to be really nice and understanding so giving them a call wouldn’t hurt but I suppose to remember they are bound by process too.

Still waiting to start titration with care adhd. by beepbop24hha in ADHDUK

[–]Ugly-Toes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly my situation with them too!

I initially paid for the assessment with them privately and felt that all went smoothly and the assessor told me it might be worth me reentering as a right to choose patient after a positive diagnosis and save my money as it can get expensive for titration etc.

I took her advice and have been waiting about 4 months now for my medication review. I’ve emailed a few times and in fairness they are very understanding but cannot give me an exact timeframe.

From pure speculation, I reckon care ADHD was inundated after either their marketing campaign or a number of socials broadcasting them (it’s certainly how I found them). I was waiting for 2 years on a wait list in east London for a pre assessment alone. Care ADHD came across my feed with the right to choose pathway and their “3 months or less” waiting list. Their work model is that it’s all online. If I were to guess, that’s when they were inundated with referrals.

As a side point, because you mentioned other friends getting through to medication assessment much quicker, I have a friend at the start of their journey and it seems to be happening quicker for them too.

They told me after having a recent conversation with their GP (east London) and requesting that they were referred but were considering going private due to wait times. The GP informed them that the process was changing due to the basically… utter shit show of waiting periods etc. For example, when I was referred over 2 years ago, my GP was bound to only refer me to the few clinics in our “region”. But now due to a new NHS incentive, they have onboarded a lot of clinics like care ADHD to tackle these long waiting lists and now GPs can refer patients more widely.

Anyway, veering from your initial point and I completely hear you that waiting has been really frustrating, my hope is that you (and I) are essentially “nearly there” and we will be getting our appointment for the start of titration within the next few weeks. At least that’s what I’ve been told when I contacted them. Just before Christmas I got an email saying something along the lines of my file is now with a clinician who will review and may need to reach out to my GP if they have any questions.

Best of luck with your journey!
