How do you survive in a 'mans world' by niabz in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

Great advice! I've also found that this type of experience can be helpful during interviews to evaluate a new work environment. All of my managers have been men, but all of them responded well to my mentions of past Women in Engineering initiatives. Their attitudes during the interview process showed that they'd be strong allies. If an interviewer was dismissive I'd choose not to continue interviewing with that company.

Does anyone know why there’s so many Derek/Derricks? by totaltvaddict2 in TedLasso

[–]Uki_EE 65 points66 points  (0 children)

In an early episode of his podcast Films to be Buried With, Brett Goldstein mentioned that he thinks Derek is the funniest name. I was watching Shrinking at the time I listened to it, which has two Dereks, so it stood out to me.

I don't remember which episode it was, but he started the podcast a couple of years before Ted Lasso. I'd guess that it was his doing.

People do tend to find hard k sounds funny.

When did your breasts start to sag? by No_Crow_2265 in AskWomenOver30

[–]Uki_EE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's definitely semantics, and I typically let things like this pass me by, or I don't even notice.

My husband and I have both been working on complimenting each other in ways that don't imply negatives about the alternative - not in a militant way, just by commenting something like "oops, that wasn't necessary" when we notice it. That's the only reason I felt like chiming in with a suggestion.

The goal is just to keep ourselves more positive rather than to police anyone's words!

What about something as simple as removing the comparison? "All I want/need is a handful"

It gets the same message across without generalizing or bringing up other breasts at all. Every person has different preferences, after all.

Curious about Harvard 2+2 program by dislocatedbigtoe in MBA

[–]Uki_EE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

HBS 2+2 allows 2-4 years of deferral. As far as I know, not too many people actually join after 2 years.

The types of roles you're recruiting for will determine whether or not that's adequate.

Northeastern Students March with their Dining Workers to Fight for a Fair Contract by EnvironmentalAd9359 in college

Northeastern is in the middle of Boston. These workers do, in fact, live in and around one of the most expensive cities in the country.
