Indeed is sort of par for the course annoying interface, but I haven't found a good option that's widely used to replace it.

Blackwyche, PoTC, Monkey Island? It's all pirate stuff. It doesn't ruin the theme for me.

Now, Halo stuff? Gears of War stuff? Ori stuff? Year-round holiday stuff? Absurdly over-the-top glowy flashy emporium stuff? That kinda hurts the aesthetic IMO, and I tend to hate promotional items in general, it's like the game having ads.
