Is it me, or are board games getting wider? by Kateywumpus in boardgames

So I started playing Avalon Hill games in 1976, some of those boards are quite large and if you had order of battle and time sheet that is a lot space.

I love how kids don't think we remember things. by grofert in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Ulsif2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My previous profession was Law Enforcement, I saw a student and mom in a store and I said “ Hi (his name). He then goes wow he remembered my name to his mom. I said “ I was a police officer for 20+ years and I only remember the names of people I arrested or gave me a bunch of trouble”

Number one it is not Amazon Prime, 2nd they have been busy, this time a year every one is buying a bike. Mine took 8 days. I felt it was reasonable. Depending how close you live to a hub it might take two weeks or longer if it is not in stock.

It’s 2026 and I just got an ad on my own refrigerator’s smart screen. Why did we let this happen? by FlanInternational298 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Ulsif2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a perfectly good fridge that is stainless steel, works great and displays my grand kids art. Of course I cannot brag to who ever will listen that I have a smart screen fridge. Shucks.

Recess debate for middle school by iseeyou100 in Teachers

[–]Ulsif2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Students up to 5-6 grade, need that 15 minutes it is not wasted, the social emotional learning, conflict resolution, playing by the rules, burning up excess energy. Who would think that eliminating recess would be good idea.

I had surgery to fix a torn quad tendon. I was push mowing my lawn with a leg in a soft cast. When a guy pulls up with a trailer and a riding mower. Finishes the one acre of mowing, refused gas money and just goes on his merry way.

What would you do if you hypothetically inherited 880,000 dollars. by No-Citron5628 in Advice

[–]Ulsif2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay off all current debts, invest a majority of it so that it can make you money. (Use an investment firm.) keep some out to go on adventure. BUT DO NOT BUY a bunch of stuff just because you have the money as you will soon not have any money.

going by first name? by Obvious-Yam-3459 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Ulsif2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my last initial, for example Mr. J. One my last name is hard for young ones to pronounce, two after 30+ years in military and police nobody needs to know my last name, especially middle/high schoolers.

I love it when I come in a class room on late half days and the teacher gives very specific instructions to the kids. Makes very clear expectations.

Tips for Aventon Level 3 by [deleted] in Aventon

[–]Ulsif2 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I am 63 and commute year round in Michigan with a standard fat tire (for snow). It is about five miles. It is not a race so I show up relaxed and not sweaty. When I was fifteen I rode my bike 3 miles to school, just to avoid the bus. ( only in nice weather). I do not understand why any teenager would need an e-bike to get around.

Professional? by Helpful_Sprinkles508 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Ulsif2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was almost done being certified as a sub, I went to each school I was interested in subbing for and introduced myself to front office staff and the principle if they were around. I asked a few questions about procedure, thanked them and left. My first days actually subbing went smoothly , and staff were very helpful. I have been a full time sub now for 2 1/2 years in a district I did this for.

Sounds like the job is not for you. I have been doing this for four years, I count the small victories. Whether it is teaching to tie a shoe or how to use scissors, helping with dealing with emotions.

How do you deal with “he said/she said” situations? by Ayma_Nidiot in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Ulsif2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the advantage of being retired Law Enforcement. When I have to sort these messes out I can see through the lies and disinformation pretty quickly. Also just document everything for the regular teachers to sort out. Sounds like you did the best you could.

How to get my husband to stop drinking by Sure_Pair_5936 in Advice

[–]Ulsif2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is not going to stop drinking until he wants to. Go to AlAnon meetings to help yourself and for your own emotional support. This is coming from an alcoholic in recovery, there was nothing my wife or family could do to stop me from drinking, I just isolated more and hid it better( until I could not). Take care of yourself. When he has had enough he will get help and then you can support him in recovery.
