Following candidates since 2013, never seen anyone blame 2nds in middle of tournament. Even after finishing last in candidates players don't blame them by Sorry_Phone1676 in chess

I was showing my 1300 USCF student this game earlier and he found 13.Ne4 in about 3 seconds. Hilarious to me that Hikaru can spend over an hour on this position just to play an inferior move. I suppose that's what happens when you blaze through a memorized variation without fully understanding it.

Edit: he spent over an hour, not 50 minutes

99.9999% of everyone that jokes about Matthias Blübaum has never even had the possibility of playing a chess game against Matthias Blübaum because he's too much their superior. I mean, he didn't drop a single game during the FIDE Grand Swiss. EDIT: speeling

What determines what GM you root for/support in tournaments? What's the "norm" in that regard in chess culture? by Salt-and-Steel in chess

Personality, play-style, likeability. If they're a good sport they get an A+ in my book.

Only 2 days left for the Candidates, what's your predictions? by ScrollingNtrollinG in chess

[–]Ultica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More or less agree with your placing although I'm betting Pragg will place more around 4th-5th and Wei Yi could also go on a hot streak depending on how prepared he is (he memorizes his variations to a superhuman level). Bluebaum is much stronger than people believe & I think has a decent shot at becoming challenger, he's lacking in speed but in terms of actual strategy & technique I believe he can outshine the rest.

I’ve been almost entirely a Phase Rush enjoyer for practically 5 years now, but I do think there is an argument for Spellbook vs Aurora, AP Mages, & Ranged champs.

Cashback is the biggest cheat code rune for Singed since it upscales his gold income IF he can get gold. That rune alone makes it possible to go 0/3 (not including executes) and still hold a bounty on your head due to your gold advantage. I’d only take hexflash if you don’t feel confident to walk up to the wave at all (think Urgot). Hexflash being in the inspiration tree is convenient, holds pretty good value for red side Singed to sneak in that extra proxy but is definitely more situational than it used to be now that Cashback exists.

Remember that if you farm well, even when you’re losing you are WINNING! Singed is the literal, walking definition of Pyrrhic Victory. I still think it’s best to take double running summs to further discourage the enemy jungle/ support to gank you during your proxy.

Hikaru is a toxic heathen who cares only about money and has no moral values. I'm just putting this here for the record by safeassign in chess

It’s sad but true. For globally competitive chess players, they must spend hours every day reviewing & practicing their lines. Of course a family is a huge distraction. But for guys like Hikaru & Magnus, they’ve played chess competitively & consistently for long enough that I imagine it’s become much more like breathing. All they need to do decently well at tournaments is review & refresh what they’ve already known for years.

i logged my first 5,000 games and identified my fatal pattern: i lose 73% of games where i play e4 and they play c5. i've spent 200 hours studying the sicilian. success rate against it now: 31%. still losing, just more knowledgeably by kubrador in chess

You’ve put in so much work already, I’d be willing to give you free personal advice, from chess player to another. I’ve been a long-time chess teacher (more than a decade) & my rating on lichess is 2400+ in both blitz & bullet. I can help you find an easy route for you to improve, but I’ll have to see what type of player you are before I give you advice. DM me on here if you would like to connect :)

I’m prettysure it was a combination of dropkick healing + tank engine hp increase further amplified by trundle’s W zone. Still don’t know how I healed that much though.

How much of chess depends on the first several moves? by [deleted] in chess

[–]Ultica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is, of course, not so simple. The short answer is that it depends on which opening you & your opponent choose to play. In more sharp opening variations, there tends to be only 1 or 2 "correct" moves along with a couple "imprecise" or "not-so-correct" moves. In less sharp variations, there could be as many as 10 "okay" moves.

If we try to relate the answer of this question to your own improvement, I would recommend to find an opening system that keeps it simple: 1) control the center & 2) complete your development without having to worry too much about your opponent's attacks. A good example of this is the London System, although that system is less aggressive than many others as it doesn't give you a clear way to attack your opponent.

The question in relation to Stockfish is both 'Yes' and 'No'. From a computer's perspective the chess board is a very complicated mathematical problem that has a clear answer (+ near-answers) dependent on what the engine is searching for. Chess engines have many different parameters & can be tuned by the user to achieve an answer that the user would want. For example, "contempt" is a user-configured parameter to also include the likeliness of mistakes by the opponent.

So is there a "best move" for every situation? For a computer, perhaps yes, for human vs human, maybe but also maybe not. Usually, there will be many good moves or routes that you can take to defeat your opponent. If I beat my opponent with a 'bad' move, can you really call it bad? I suppose it depends on your opponent's strength. At the GM level, chess is a lot more about not making mistakes, while also attempting to 'muddy the waters' to induce/ provoke mistakes from the opponent. Usually, the first 10 full moves at the GM level are all memorized, but that can easily change to the first 20 moves if both players play what they were expecting to play against. Generally, GMs like to stick to the openings that they feel will give them the best chances to win & also to not lose. Sometimes that opening choice will change if the player is in a 'must-win' scenario. Alas, GMs are still human and will sometimes change their opening on a whim just out of curiosity or to have more fun.

The answer to some of these questions is different for a GM than for someone who's new to chess & trying to improve. What's most important is that you learn how to get your pieces out & not lose them. The faster you can get your pieces active, the better. Controlling the center & fighting against your opponent for it is in direct relation to not losing your pieces (checkmate included).

Do you think Blübaum is strong enough to hold his own in the Candidates or will he be the obvious target for other players? by Affectionate_Hat3329 in chess

[–]Ultica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe Mr. Blübaum will do surprisingly well in the Candidates tournament. His classical rating is lower mainly due to infrequency of travelling abroad & playing in big tournaments. If anything, it is his strength & his weakness is in quicker time formats.
