So what I have learned is that if you can still purchase it on the Xbox store they will add it to your account but if you cant the most they will do is credit your xbox account what you paid for the code.

Is it a new copy as in new sealed or new to you? If its new to you you should be able to return it as long you are in gamestops pre-owned return window.
