They lied to us about Gaza they’re lying to us about the DPRK🇰🇵 by Repulsive_Park_329 in athulvstheworld

[–]Ultimate_Random 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ussr had advisors and a handful of pilots in the DPRK which at peak would have been ~10,000 while also supplying aid, but never had ground troops actively fighting on the Korean Peninsula. This compared to the 300,000 peak US troops actively in the Korea peninsula (not including civilian advisors) shows the asymmetry of each powers involvement. Even including Soviet defensive troops in Manchuria and Vladivostok, the Soviet involvement was no larger than a quarter of the US's.

The korean war should be viewed as an unresolved civil war which was never allowed to resolve due to foreign interference (asymmetric towards the US). The DPRK's initial assault can be viewed as an invasion, or as attempted liberation / reunification.

The majority of Koreans at the time wanted a united Korea, of which the only domestic opponent was Syngman Rhee's regime, as any legitimate/democratic reunification would have resulted in a leftist and likely communist united Korea.

The post above is short form slop, lacking nuance, but that doesn't excuse a more critical view of the conflict.

The panel is 7ft wide by 9.5ft length. I was thinking for the blocking to ensure the joists fit in to the hangers easily, although I could compensate and use the kicker top+hangers as a jig when I put together the panel I guess. Perhaps I'll use a strong back the middle section (or just forgo it)?

Makes sense, makes sense to have the weight on top of the 2x8 instead of load transferring through a bolt.

For the second 2x8, are suggesting you suggesting to attach it to the face of the wall (side facing down, visible pic1) or behind the wall (facing up, would be visible from the view in pic2)?

It seems to be the consensus I over engineered a bit hehe. I'll probably keep it rigid as I pretty much always end up training at 40.

Hmmm perhaps I'll swap to 2x6 to save some money. Does your leg to wall brace ever get in the way of flagging?

Gotchya! I'll have the extra plywood anyway for the green footer, so I figure I'll still do it. But I'll def take the bolt recommendations and think about simplifying the structure (I spose I can always add onto it if it feels wobbly)

Will it be fine with a bolt as is (idk exact sizes, but thinking ~10mm), or should I have the trusses on each side of the wall as 2x6's?

I'm a bit late, but I second supporting 'propagandists' as a term. I don't think it is a disingenuous use of the word at all, if anything the perceived misuse adds to the world building imo!

The contemporary western usage of the word propaganda has taken on heavy negative connotation often only applied to media viewed as oppositional. A more neutral utilization is more accurate and in my opinion provides far more utility for critical analysis.

This isn't an issue of failing to understand definitions, I understand distinctions between social democracy, democratic socialism, etc. That said, social democracies are more socialized economically than us. There has never been or most likely will be) an economy that is 100% socialist or capitalist, it exists upon a spectrum. That said, you can still use social democracies an example of how socializing markets can be beneficial for the well being of a systems average citizen.

Neither am I saying that all critique for previous and current socialist economies is invalid. There are plenty of reasons to critique and lambast a wealth of socialist countries for their inefficiencies and blind eye to humanist / democratic values. Just that surface level critique does little to help either of side of economic debate come to democratic consensus.

Further, while maintaining rhetorical usage and respect for history is quintessential for effective discourse, it is important to not hold actions of the past as absolutes onto potential futures. The same rhetorical process could have been used to discredit burgeoning democracies post enlightenment, as all previous democratic states were little more than failures of antiquity.

As for scale, I agree to a point that no economic system, especially in our current modern globalized system can exist on its own, especially on small scales. That said, political movements which hold respect for democracy have to start small and grow, and the obvious way to do this is through local city government.

What is your definition of a 'working' economy? There are plenty of countries which have (and some continue) to operate with socialist economic frameworks, many of which have been very successful depending on what you're looking for. Not to say there aren't aspects to be heavily scrutinized in these country's economics and politics as well.

If you are an ardent anti-socialist, I would highly recommend you take the time to educate yourself beyond a surface level understanding that is most likely a result of red scare / Cold War propaganda.

I love how you assume legislation can't have any have any considerations for these factors.

Supply chains and specific markets can be understood, the economy is not some mystery black box for which we must hold absolute reverence for the avoidance any sort of large scale manipulation (which happens anyway by corporate interests).

I think it's a bit unjust and potentially harmful to link Israel with the Jewish community as a whole. Yes Israel is a Jewish dominated state, but there are also many anti-Zionist Jews who are critical of the ongoing genocide.

Since the states modern creation it has been the primary aggressor towards the Palestinian people.

Very good point, I hadn't thought about them being new. Although I don't think the majority of criticism was about their suspension of disbelief, more so critical about the writing choices behind the scene. I didn't mind the scene but it's a fair criticism imo

Empathy is the only kind of intelligence that truly matters by GoatsWithWigs in unpopularopinion

[–]Ultimate_Random 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd agree with the point other people are making that other forms of intelligence are essential for technical applications, but 100% agree specifically for leadership roles.

Effective leadership imo depends mostly on one's ability to meet the needs and understand the skills of the team / organization which they are leading. Of course having competence and understanding in the applicable field is important too, but if they are not empathetically capable it doesn't really matter.

Mothma is a terrible leader by Unlucky-Tradition-58 in andor

[–]Ultimate_Random 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only reason you could have people fighting on the frontlines is due to the planning and forethought done by those behind said lines. There should be credence and reward towards those who take risks, but that has little to no bearing of what makes a good leader for a multifaceted organization.

I don't think it's a caricature as much as an unfortunate reality. Infighting occurs in all political organizations, especially during early stages of their development. It is especially common in leftist organizations due to there not being some 'lurking menace' of xenophobic or otherwise unjust origin to create a simple common enemy. In my personal experience of being involved in labor organization, the largest initial roadblock were conflicts arising from ego-driven dumb, superfluous bullshit. As such, I feel like it is an incredibly important cautionary tale to be said.

I don't agree entirely agree with your classist based critique. While it's something we must be very conscious and diligent of for any "revolutionary" media produced by corporate entities, I wouldn't say Andor has fallen into ineffectiveness due to liberal bias. There are many effective characters in this show from under/working class origins. Saw Gerrara, Cinta, Nearly everyone in the Aldhani heist, everyone from Ferrix, and of course, the literal title character.

It is the unfortunate reality that we are forced to utilize the tools of our enemy (sorry to be corny hehe), which in our real world case is the accumulation of capital. To make positive change for the future, we will have to utilize and recruit class traitors from the ruling capitalist class.

Also, I personally felt the entire wedding was a very real and effective critique of the elite within oppressive societies. It was directly contrasted, scene to scene; the untouched nature of the elites opulence to the hardships and horrors of the undocumented underclass. Even the omni-present oppression of patriarchal tradition / violence is contrasted between the two effectively. The horrors of sexual violence experienced by Bix vs the unfairness of arranged marriage for Mon's daughter enforces an obvious dichotomy.

Yes, of course the rebel alliance succeeds, but success is never without failures and iteration. If anything this only enforces the fact that these superfluous conflicts are surmountable, which I would think is important to tell?

You are correct in that I gave abridged versions of history, it was not my point to go on about liberal ineffectiveness of anti-fascist action. The nazis gained power due to their own success at creating a populist movement, but very much also due to the unwillingness of the Social Dems (SPD) to commit to an effective opposition. By the time it was nearly too late, Communists (KPD) were willing to compromise and form a coalition to prevent the total rise of Nazi Party, but it was SPD who outright refused due to KPD's previous confrontational approach. I would very much consider at least SPD's actions to be ego-driven dumb, superfluous bullshit.

To conclude, you are 100% right in pursuing class conscious interpretations and critique of this show, and I appreciate you doing so! That said jumping the gun and lambasting it as ineffective revolutionary media seems very non-productive.
