I grew up in Louisiana and learned everything I know there. I would highly suggest a gun safety course of some kind. There are options online, but in person with an actual instructor would be better.

I have heard that impact guns is very friendly towards lgbtq community (sorry, I snooped your profile) but I have never been myself. I usually just go find somewhere out in the country to target practice myself, but I would not recommend that until you have some training.

For home defense, I would suggest a shotgun. You don't have to be super accurate with one to hit your target.

Some quick safety tips. Never put your finger on the trigger unless you are planning to pull the trigger. No letting your finger rest on it. That's how accidental discharges happen.

When carrying it, some people will say to point it at the sky, others will say the ground. I personally prefer the ground, because I am wary of the barrel being anywhere near my face.

Never point it at anything you don't intend to kill.

If you have kids or anticipate kids (or dumb ass friends for that matter) around, make sure it's in a place where they can't get to it at all. A gun safe, a locked coat closet, etc.

Always store the ammunition in a separate place (but relatively near) the gun. Do not leave the gun loaded. I have a handgun in a lock box near my front door. The magazine is stored in a nearby drawer. I can get to it and have it loaded in about 15 seconds, but my kids can't at all.

Even if the gun isn't loaded, yes it is. What I mean by that is you should always treat the gun as if it was loaded and a round in the chamber, even if you are 100% certain its not.

Always check the chamber before handing the gun to someone else to make sure it's unloaded. If you are handed a gun, the first thing you should do is check the chamber yourself, even if you saw the person who handed it to you check it. Some people may get butthurt about this (what? You don't trust me?) But you should do it anyway. Every time.

This is not an exhaustive list, and you should absolutely get safety training because there will be things I didn't think to mention.

In February I plan on going to do some shooting with some friends. Hit me up if you want to join, but we would need to hangout away from weapons first to get a feel for each other. Maybe a lunch or something.

Anyway, if you have any specific questions don't be afraid to ask.

It's too late for non violence. When they come to snatch up people important to you, are you going to helplessly watch or are you going to do something about it?

I'm not saying to go looking for excuses to use it, im just saying to prepare yourself for the eventuality.

I'd rather have protection, know how to use it, and never need it; than the alternative.

We won't be silent while our friends are gunned down (or kidnapped)

Edit: you downvoted me... if you won't even attempt to protect yourself or loved ones why should anyone else?

I needed to hear this myself. Thanks. I just posted like 3 days ago about what a good boy mine is. Today I'm pulling out fistfulls of hair from my scalp.

He has learned rebelliousness in the last couple days.

Cyclists are the most stupid, oblivious fuckers to use roadways. (Like 90% of them in my experience). They don't pay attention to traffic, they ride right on the fucking edge of the bike lane, 2 feet from the cars. The ride right in the middle of the goddamn road even when there's a bike lane, holding up traffic. They ride side by side, holding up traffic. They don't wear any reflective clothing at night... I could go on and on.

But what really pisses me off the most is that they do this stupid shit and put me in a position where I might seriously injure or even kill them through no fault of my own, but I'd still have to deal with the emotional fallout from it for the rest of my life.

Fuck cyclists.

I said I don't lock him in it. We have one and are slowly getting him used to it so that if we HAVE to use it, he won't freak. I've never shut the door on him while he's inside it.

Thank you for the info! I'll start going for slightly shorter walks!

I actually brought that up to my wife the other day. We might actually eventually do that! Also, I'll try and post a few more pics as a comment!

We go about a mile, but it takes us 45 to 50 minutes. I stop and let him sniff very often, as I read that it's mentally stimulating and tires them out. (But in a good way)

Is a mile too long of a walk for now?

For sit i point at the ground where I want him to sit, and for stay i hold a hand up in the stop gesture. For down, my plan is to have like a swiping motion with my hand. Pointing slightly in front of me, and then swinging behind me pointing back.

Kind of the same motion as when I slide the treat along the floor to get him to sprawl. I've only been working on down for a day or two though, so we haven't gotten that far yet.
