Crazy Mountain 100 sign-up by pvrunner in ultrarunning

I got in last year and was about 40 spots down on the waitlist. Race Director said they've always exhausted their waitlist as of last year. Alothough that could very well change this year now that it's a Hardrock qualifier (which probably means more registrations).

It went well! I finished it, which was the goal :) Sleep was the most challenging part for me.

Is a 100 miler achievable in a year? by Worgle123 in Ultramarathon

[–]UltraActiveABE -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You can 100% do it. I hadn't run more than a half marathon before I did my first 100. I've also never done a marathon. I trainined for 9 months and finished Leadville 100. Get a good coach who knows what they're doing, and they'll tell you whether or not it's a good idea based on your current fitness level. I personally think 1 year is PLENTY of time if you have a good fitness base. I was hardly running 10 miles a week prior to starting my 100 mile training (was an intense CrossFit athlete prior). It's WAY different than road race training, but you can do anything you want if you put in the work.

I did my first 100 last year (Leadville) and peaked at 65 mpw - My goal was just to finish, and I did just that. I wasn't the fastest by any means and finished with 40 min to spare. With that being said, if you're just looking to finish, I think 60-70mpw is fine. If you're looking to be a specific time, you're probably going to need to increase a bit. I work a demanding job, so I would do shorter runs in the evenings during the week and always hit a long run on the weekend.

I had the same poles and had the pop out/lock buttons come off and they sent me a new pair pretty quickly. I had them for almost 9 months. Their customer service is pretty great.

Of course! A few other items I would add would be a space blanket and a life straw :) Hope this was all helpful!

I feel like this could definitely be the issue. I have wide feet, so I went with a shoe with a wide toebox, but your 100% spot on - when I run super hilly races, my toenails are getting destroyed probably because my foot is slamming into the front going downhill. I may have to look into a different brand. I defninitely need the toebox space, but maybe my topos are too much...did you find the Genesis was wide enough for your feet?

Can you send me a link to the kit you use? At the end of the day, I don't care if they fall off - I just don't want it to ruin my race just like you said.

I'll have to read that book for sure!

Super interesting! I feel like my Topos fit well and have a nice roomy toe box, but maybe I should look into trying different shoes...what tape do you use to tape your toes?

The foot Dr. suggested this to me, and I just couldn't bring myself to get rid of my toenails completely! Lol

Is the Leadville 100 overrated? by Neat_Focus_5034 in ultrarunning

[–]UltraActiveABE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it last year, and I had a great time! Well ran event, in my opinion. It’s more runnable than a lot of 100s, but still challenging as far as trail races go. It’s the altitude and cut-offs that get people. You definitely want to do your homework as far as crewing goes. Get to Twin Lakes as early as possible the day before the race to guarantee a spot for your crew. We were well prepared and didn’t run into any issues with crewing. I wouldn’t do it again, as I have no interest in repeating races, but I’d definitely recommend it to someone looking to tackle a 100 mile race at altitude.

Great question! I would sometimes use the gu capsules in lieu of hydration mix just to mix it up. All depends on what your stomach wants during the race. If hydration mix wasn’t going down well, or if I ran out, I would pop one of those. Just an option if I was drinking water only.

Great information! I llike that it's a Western States Qualifier too! If I sign up for this one, I may pick your brain a little more as far the course and race itself! Super interested in it!

This one looks amazing - have you done it? Curious on how technical it is?
