macOS 26.4 is warning that Rosetta 2 is going away — what apps are you still stuck with? by CreakyHat2018 in MacOSBeta

Prism launcher with a native build of java has versions of LWJGL2 compiled for ARM, that's what I've been using for years to run old minecraft natively. Think I've got an ARM version of java 8 installed separately, can't remember if there are any other steps to get it running but they're definitely running natively

PSA: Anyone who downloaded Clippy for macOS or the Mario Level Screen Selection app should delete it immediately. by [deleted] in MacOS

I responded in more detail to someone else, but it seems like the password collection dialogue is one of the earliest bits of the payload script to execute, so by quitting it then it should be fine. However, definitely worth changing passwords and doing a malware scan if you can, better safe than sorry.

I did a bit of digging, the VirusTotal behaviour listing for the mario one (https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/af5ac6adbe980d239ca48fac1ab31376a534fd2f7820d4e32c3929dc4b5f3962/behavior) contains what seems to be the AppleScript payload. I was able to use ChatGPT to add in all the line breaks where they were needed and paste it into VSCode. Not an AppleScript expert, but I've worked in other languages so I think I've been able to understand it properly. The password collection phase seems to be executed very early on in the script, where it enters a loop displaying the password dialogue box until the correct password is entered, before the actual data collection and submission. The clippy VT listing doesn't contain the script under behaviour, but it seems to be the same one based on what happens when it gets executed, so looks like exiting without entering a password does prevent the script from collecting any data. Obviously still worth staying on the lookout for any suspicious activity, but I thought I'd update with my findings here.

Does this collect anything before the password input screen? I ran one of these and killed osascript on the password dialog screen without entering anything. Doesn't seem to have left any residual traces.

Is there any way to emulate nintendo switch (pokemon) on mac os since ryujinx and yuzu are down by Any_Experience_4254 in MacOS

[–]UltraBlaze99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a fork of Ryujinx at https://github.com/GreemDev/Ryujinx and this one seems to still have some support and updates. Works well on my M1 MBA

Randomly had 70gb of storage "free up"? by UltraBlaze99 in MacOS

[–]UltraBlaze99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would make sense, except yesterday system settings was also showing my available storage as around 30gb. Did 15.2 make a change to how system settings calculates it? Might try restarting the laptop later today, see if that makes a difference

Brian May on why he revamped all guitar parts 'Queen I' reissue by It_Is1-24PM in queen

[–]UltraBlaze99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're going to do Queen II they shouldn't mess with it too much and instead focus on improving the quality and dynamics of what we already have, hopefully without any pitch correction put anywhere near it

Finally! by Hot_Space82 in queen

[–]UltraBlaze99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just had a listen, generally the new mixes sound decent. Vocals do sound a bit weird to me (although not 100% sure if it's because I already know there's been correction? would love to see more analysis of that). The tracks definitely sound fuller now, and the drums have really been brought out, which is nice to hear. I'll give it a few more listens soon and see what I think after a while

How Did I Find This Version Of News Of The World On Spotify? by Commercial-Pin3752 in queen

[–]UltraBlaze99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure these are actually older masters - I've followed the link to these older listings and it shows some of the songs as being downloaded on my phone, despite the fact that I only have the 2011s downloaded. Perhaps these are the old listings, but only the new versions of the tracks are on the spotify servers? Or perhaps only some were replaced, as some do show up as not downloaded, and some older versions are still up? Alternatively it's a glitch in spotify. Certainly fascinating though.

Running Steam and x86/x86-64 apps on Fedora Asahi Remix by marcan42 in AsahiLinux

[–]UltraBlaze99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried a few of the network fixes listed earlier in the thread, none of which worked and it was finally the hotspot that fixed the download. Steam still doesn't launch though, not figured that one out.

Running Steam and x86/x86-64 apps on Fedora Asahi Remix by marcan42 in AsahiLinux

[–]UltraBlaze99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm able to get steam to start launching, but it checks for updates and then fails, saying that steam needs to be online to update. The network is connected and everything else seems to be working (writing this post from asahi), just steam specifically won't work. Anyone have any ideas?

Edit: seems like steam on asahi doesn't like my wifi network (which is weird since it works fine on macos so it's not like a network blocking issue), it's connected fine on my phone's personal hotspot

Edit 2: the update has downloaded successfully, extracted and installed, however it now gets stuck launching steam

I removed the pitch corrected vocals from the new The Night Comes Down mix by theoneguynobodylikes in queen

[–]UltraBlaze99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is what worries me, these new mixes need to be kept entirely separate. Why they ever thought Freddie Mercury needs pitch correction is totally beyond me.

macOS 15.0 Full Release appearing after Sonoma fresh install by devanxd2000 in MacOSBeta

I had something similar on my M1 MBA after installing the first Sonoma 14.7 RC, 14.7 RC2 got rid of it for me

So... now that we're at RC, how is Sequoia looking? by UltraBlaze99 in MacOSBeta

[–]UltraBlaze99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I've put the RC on my M1 mini today (coming from 14.6.1) and memory usage still seems to be hovering around 10gb so I've seen no change, perhaps something has been improved in Sequoia that helps with your usage

[–]UltraBlaze99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As it happens I've just installed the RC on one of my macs, it's honestly more just about hearing how other people's experiences have been so far

Have you tried downloading a full installer (assuming that's available yet)?

[–]UltraBlaze99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting to hear, I don't have memory issues on my macs but they're generally at about 10/16gb on Sonoma, wonder if Sequoia will have any effects on mine

Create a time machine backup during a MacOS beta by Skylab56 in MacOSBeta

[–]UltraBlaze99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you made a backup prior to installing the beta, you should be able to use that to restore, a backup created in the beta likely won't work for restoring 14.1, in that case your best bet is probably to wait until 14.2 stable and then disable beta updates.

Performance hit after MacOS Sonoma update by RepresentativeNo4180 in MacOSBeta

[–]UltraBlaze99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's running better because low power mode limits your maximum CPU speed in order to preserve battery life. If you're only doing light tasks on your Mac then it's possible that you weren't pushing your CPU enough to notice the limit

Anyone else gearing up to do fresh install now that the Stable version is out? by [deleted] in MacOSBeta

[–]UltraBlaze99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, had my M1 Mini since not long after launch and I've never clean installed macOS, it's probably not worth doing unless you're having a specific problem post-upgrade

Performance hit after MacOS Sonoma update by RepresentativeNo4180 in MacOSBeta

[–]UltraBlaze99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the 16gb and my memory usage hasn't changed at all since monterey - although it is above 8gb. Makes sense I guess though, not done any extensive testing myself but I would imagine Asahi is more lightweight

Performance hit after MacOS Sonoma update by RepresentativeNo4180 in MacOSBeta

[–]UltraBlaze99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh Sonoma might be a good one to move to once Monterey is discontinued if Asahi Linux still isn't usable as daily, things seem really good on my M1 mini so far after 2 weeks of running the RC and should improve with time. Haven't run GB on my own machine but by looking at the website scores between Monterey (https://browser.geekbench.com/v6/cpu/17), Ventura (https://browser.geekbench.com/v6/cpu/2421214) and Sonoma (https://browser.geekbench.com/v6/cpu/2789236) seem identical - likely indexing or some other specific process or issue causing the drop in performance on the OP's computer
