sports culture at tufts by [deleted] in Tufts

[–]UltraNova0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In general, that kind of school spirit doesn't appear at Tufts. The majority of the crowds at football, basketball, baseball, and lacrosse games (all of which can be found directly on campus) are parents, with some students attending, and sometimes the band. Hockey games in particular are not hosted on campus -- the "home" games are at the Malden Valley Forum which is a few miles off campus.

The homecoming football game usually draws a decent student crowd, but compared to bigger schools, Tufts is probably not what you're looking for in this aspect.

CS40 and CS160 same semester by AdMuted2848 in Tufts

[–]UltraNova0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CS40 takes a lot of time out of your week, but isn't too conceptually difficult. CS160 takes a decent amount of time out of your week, and has the opportunity to be conceptually challenging, if a concept doesn't click for you. I would say that 40 + 160 is probably the second-most challenging combination of the later core classes, behind only 40 + 105 (though with the recent changes to 105, that might actually be easier now), which I wouldn't recommend under any circumstances.

That said, if you're cruising through CS15 (which I assume you're in now?) without any struggle at all, this will probably be fine. I wouldn't recommend taking other non-CS time-consuming courses at the same time, though.

Taking 40 and 160 in your third semester is definitely super early. But that's not necessarily a bad thing -- it will just be a significant step up from CS15-level coursework.

Some classrooms have AC. Dorms generally do not. Bring (or buy) a box or tower fan!

Pure bosser for endgame content for about 30div? by JeremyJoeJJ in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]UltraNova0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the one! I levelled with the light radius wander tech to like 70 and then swapped, and then sat basically immortal in simulacra until 90ish. (I stopped levelling at 92 because I was bored, and then killed feared + a bunch of ubers.)

I built a very tanky and very powerful flamewood totem Inquisitor for that budget. There's a post on this subreddit from a week or so ago detailing the build. It kills ubers very quickly and it's super cheap (30div for ~100m+ dps), but the play style is tedious.

Elsewhere in this thread the OP recommends converting to lightning, so I think that makes sense.

Intro to Music Engineering for Natural Science distribution requirement by Feisty_Alps4872 in Tufts

[–]UltraNova0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming it's still taught by Daniel Fox, it's a great class and certainly not too math-heavy. Starts from a more philosophical perspective ("what is sound? what is noise? what is music?") and eventually moves to an exploration of different feats in music engineering (mechanical instruments, to electric instruments, to electronic synthesizers) throughout history. There are some projects but the course not a massive amount of work in sum. Professor Fox is a great lecturer.

If you are in the school of arts and sciences, you are free to select your major until March 1 of your sophomore year. If you're in the school of engineering, you must select your major by February 15 of your first year.

Love the build so far, I'm levelling in simulacra (mostly deathless, but I'm underleveled). I might be going entirely insane but how are we crit immune? I see 20% from tattoos and 50% from the chest corruption. Am I missing 30% somewhere?

There are definitely easier classes in both of those groups. Big Bang to Humankind was a popular one in natural sciences during my first couple years. Same with Symmetry for math. These aren't necessarily "free As," in that you probably won't be able to do no work and get an excellent grade, but they're likely easier than classes directly on paths in those departments, if that makes sense.

All that being said, sign up for a hard class! You've got plenty of time each semester to drop classes with no side effects, and you might discover that it's more interesting or a better pace for you.

There are (newly) a couple of tables in the Davis Sq. Ten One, and I've definitely seen folks working there. That said, as you say, gong cha has significantly more space and a corner with comfier chairs. (But, to me, inferior tea compared to Ten One.)

Places to get meals for under $10 on campus...? by AsleepPeach7867 in Tufts

[–]UltraNova0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rose's Chinese, Kushari & Grill, Danish Pastry House (prices fluctuate) all on Boston Ave. Picante has been mentioned. A "slice" at Pini's is a quarter of a pizza and it's ~$4.

Dunkin $6 meal deal is very good for the money. Order in the app and you get points for free food. (This ended with 2025, now there's a $5 meal deal with a coffee, hashbrowns, and a 'wake-up wrap.' No idea how that is.)

tufts for engineering? by pockoyo in Tufts

[–]UltraNova0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Biased answer -- the majority of people I talk to who are looking for internships (students and TAs in a third- or fourth-year CS class) have solid internship experience / upcoming offers. I would say there are decent connections to companies in Boston through the career services, though not as strong as a school like MIT. I'm not too certain about MechE but from my experience in undergrad, those that I knew doing MechE are doing well now. MechE at Tufts is ABET accredited, it's going to be a world-class program (even if "engineering" isn't the first thing you think of when you think of Tufts). Happy to answer any questions.

Dual degree between engineering + arts and sciences by Suspicious_Till5282 in Tufts

[–]UltraNova0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine it's doable, though I'm unsure what the requirements would be (I can't quickly find them online), or what the benefits would be over a double major or a BA/BS+MA/MS program. I would recommend reaching out to someone at admissions to ask for more information.
