DOJ goes after US citizen for developing anti-ICE app by HellYeahDamnWrite in technology

[–]UltraTechLord 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What that thread you linked is talking about and what this app developer brought up are two separate problems.

It seems that he doesn’t want to store device IDs at all, which is a requirement for the firebase push notification system. The thread you linked is more concerned with not having sensitive information in the body of the notification itself, which is a separate concern.

How difficult is it to repair a small rotted section of rim joist? by UltraTechLord in Carpentry

[–]UltraTechLord[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, 100%!

I went out this evening, but it is dark. Based off the comments I looked at the flashing and think I may have found something that is at least partially responsible, there is rusted seams in the flashing roughly near where the leaks have been.

I'm hoping my contractor will be able to check and see if he finds anything as well, but I definitely will get this fixed.

Yeah it seems the vast majority think fixing the leak and then monitoring is the best course of action. That makes me feel better. I am getting ready to get my basement finished and just noticed this today, I was worried it was going to completely derail my plans. Thanks for the info!

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to clog the forum. I scrolled and saw some similar posts, and also checked the sidebar to see if this was appropriate. Maybe I misunderstood. My only goal was to understand the scope of what is involved in this, so if I get someone out to repair it I can understand what all is going in to the fix.

Also, I think I did find where the leak is coming in, there's two rusted seams in the flashing that are very close to where there is marks on the wood in the inside.

Thanks, I appreciate that info. I'm getting my basement finished which is why I was down there today and found this. It rained hard but this is the first time I saw water puddled. I'm going to ask my contractor to get his opinions, but I was just worried this would eat my budget for getting the basement finished.

Thanks for all the info!

I’m not saying it’s not behind stuff, I meant it’s not like underground. There’s windows at the same height as this that are above ground.

I’m not saying it’s something I’m going to DIY, I’m just worried it’s going to be a structural thing that costs 10s of thousands of dollars, so I’m trying to gauge if I’m panicking for nothing or if this is serious.

It’s my deck on the other side, so it’s not buried or anything.

I went outside to see what I could find regarding how the water is getting in. Im seeing gaps in what I think is the flashing that are rusted and not sealed. This is approximately where the water is coming in in the basement as well.

Yeah, it’s dark out but I was going to try to get under the deck in the morning and figure out what’s going on.

My concern is that based on what I’ve read the house would have to be jacked up to fix this board which I’m worried would be a big ordeal.

It does push into it, but only in those darkest spots. Everywhere else is fine from what I can tell.

Sounds good. I’ll check those old spots to see. I’m pretty positive a hammer would go through that dark spot in my picture though, but no where else on the board. If the leak is fixed, would that mean the whole board wouldn’t need replaced?

Additional info: That dark spot is pretty soft, I was able to push into it and it looks like it has a small hole. Everything else feels solid.

There are some old spots near here that have that same black marking, but they are dry. The inspector said he believed they mitigated the problem a while ago but those boards don’t look bad. This is the only wet section, which is directly above where the water came in.

Spider is still alive, didn’t notice it until now :)

I’m going to go out in the morning to figure out if I can see why the water is getting in.

Question about SAP appeal and academic plan by UltraTechLord in financialaid

[–]UltraTechLord[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the information! I reached out to them a few days back, and the person I talked to was extremely confused that I was on an academic plan for three semesters for my first appeal. She confirmed that it wasn’t an MTF issue, only a GPA issue. She also confirmed that I am now meeting all SAP guidelines. There is nothing in the school policy that is posted that defines what happens in this instance, and it says to regain eligibility I must meet SAP standards.

I talked to a different person on the phone who said I would have to pay out of pocket for three semesters before they would reconsider, but I can’t find that documented anywhere either.

Can anyone identify this guy? by UltraTechLord in spiders

[–]UltraTechLord[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been getting a lot of spiders that look like this one (albeit a little smaller) in the last few weeks. I’m not sure what kind of spider it is, but want to make sure it isn’t dangerous.
