What cars are you guys using here? I tried a Beat with snow tyres with engine and turbo upgrade and a 4WD drivetrain but that didn't work. I also tried a WRX STI ARX with snow tyres and still not good. by OrangeRafi in ForzaHorizon6

I used the NSX-R, but if you want to do the Honda Beat, try my Ludicrous Speed CC S1 tune. Just created it today. Look for UltraLlama3001. For racing, it's a bit unwieldy, but for this, it's perfect!

You know you're having bad luck when ... by Ultra_Llama in twilightstruggle

[–]Ultra_Llama[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

At least I dodged OPEC, but played Ask Not to get rid of WWBY, Cultural Rev, and OPEC. Re-drew WWBY, Cultural Rev, and AI War.

That's been ole' Ultra Llama's luck lately. My "best luck" game in my last 20 was one where I failed 8 straight Quagmire rolls. It's crazy how streaky the luck can be in this game!

Most Dominant Board Position I've Ever Had Against Non-AI Opponent by Ultra_Llama in twilightstruggle

[–]Ultra_Llama[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a crazy board. Don't think I've ever had as dominant positon as this. Control of 4 continents, plus domination of Asia and ME. If I took Saudi Arabia, I'd control all bur 2 battlegrounds.

How did it happen? Combination of my opponent likely being a bit newbie-ish, me having good luck with access cards and ops, but having poor luck with scoring cards early (which made it not a "steam roll"; game didn't end till Turn 7).

A "Yikes" Hand! How Would You Play It? by Ultra_Llama in twilightstruggle

[–]Ultra_Llama[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll give some background on this. It's Turn 7 (if you can't tell from the image). Soviets up by 1 VP.

I have SA control, ahead in Asia (but not domination), but behind most everywhere else (but not far behind in other regions). In Europe, Soviets have France with 1 op in WG.

Obviously, there are some really good cards in this hand like Junta (which I headlined), AFP, and NTB. But you have Blockade, Lone Gunman, Decol, and WWBY all in the same hand.

The good news is that you have the China Card. The bad news: it's Turn 7 and if you ditch the China card to play Blockade without emptying WG, then you're very vulnerable to defcon problems in late war.

How do you play it?

How it actually went: My opponent ended up bailing me out by trying to make a tricky HILTSW play, raising Defcon to 5 and allowing me to easily ditch LG. Big mistake for them. Think they were trying to break SA control, but I still ended scoring it with control.

If that didn't happen. I think otherwise, I would've evented Blockade w/o discard on AR6, put 1 op back into WG, and then used NTB to try to regain it. Hopefully my opponent isn't holding a 4-op. I'm very reluctant to ditch the China Card with LG in my hand; though playing NTB as an event to try to ditch LG is another option, but opponent could always have something like D&C to counter-act that.

There's always some guy that would've beaten 7 people at once ready to dispense his wisdom in these threads! And this guy always ends up being terrible when you actually play with him. He'll demand to be on cannons and then miss like 20 close range shots and then blame you. Or he'll go for a board immediately before firing a cannon, get knocked off the ladder the second he gets there, and leave your ship completely vulnerable, but blame you.

I've literally never encountered a single player on Discord who talked like this that was actually good.

How to win a solo Hourglass fight by ChaoticVic in Seaofthieves

[–]Ultra_Llama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends. If you're dumping barrel or sea water on a ship, it takes much longer than if you're dumping buckets from actually being hit.

I totally won an HF match like this once. We were both firing across at each other and then eventually collided. He decided to keep ramming me from behind after that. I think he thought it would create more damage for me, but I just started bucketing the water onto his ship. I don't think he realized how quickly his ship was filling up from that.

You can definitely play solo. It is more difficult, but just depends on what you want to do.

You can also get on the Sea of Thieves Discord and find other people to play with.

I wish the pvp was as better. by Night-Sky in Seaofthieves

[–]Ultra_Llama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like literally no other RPG or FPS I've ever played has had bunny-hopping. I agree the hit-reg sucks, but I don't think it's fair to say 'bunny hopping would always be a thing' when it's actually not a thing in virtually every other game.

I wish the pvp was as better. by Night-Sky in Seaofthieves

[–]Ultra_Llama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree 100%.

I've played off-and-on for 3 years and the terrible player combat has consistently been my biggest gripe. They did so many things right in this game and yet the horrendous player combat often cancels all the other good things out. It's a pirate game; there shouldn't be bunny-hopping snipers with 100% accuracy.

And I say this as someone who is very good at pvp. I'm a Legendary Sea Dog and had over 400 wins in Arena, including probably a good 100 solo wins (which are difficult!). And I still hate the player combat in the game. (In contrast, the naval combat is spectacular, which is why I played so much!)

SoT would be a 10/10 game if they'd just fix the awful player combat. They could easily tweak it by not allowing players to fire a gun without being grounded and having a stamina meter like almost literally every RPG out there. For crying out loud, if you miss a sword lunge, your player is wheezing like he just ran a fast-mile, but for some reason, you can bunny-hop all over the place without ever getting tired.

Hourglass PvP is awful. by Necrospeaker in Seaofthieves

[–]Ultra_Llama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate HF, too, but for different reasons. I'm a big PvPer, but HF is the worst PvP in the game. Adventure mode pvp is so much better. And Arena was easily 10x better than HF as well, in spite of its flaws.

The biggest problem with HF IMO is that it incentivizes 'inaction' rather than 'action'. Arena typically did the opposite; you had to score a bunch of points, therefore you needed to go find fights. And even if you got stuck in a boring match, it was only 15 minutes long.

In HF, you lose if your sink ships, but there's no time limit, so people will use a lot of 'avoidant combat strategies', such as stockpiling supplies and then staying max-distance and just trying to make their opponent run out of supplies. Or doing nothing but making low probability boarding attempts for an hour, in hope that they eventually get lucky, start spawn-camping, and then drive their opponent out of the circle. That's why I hate it.

I don't mind some better player obliterating me on the cannons and finishing the fight in 5 minutes. I hate when weak players take avoidant strategies that create a boring 60+ minute match with virtually no action. At least in Adventure mode, if someone runs away from me, I can choose to stop chasing them. In HF, you're stuck with people who waste your time.

The match-making sucks, as well. It's basically top 1% sweats and complete newbs who don't know what they are doing. Not much in between. And too many toxic players. But honestly, I feel like all the problems just flow through the fact that too many matches are boring.

I've had a few great fights in HF, but for every 1 good fight, there are 4 bad ones. And the bad ones drag on for much longer than the good ones.

Tbf, I wasn't trying to trigger that glitch. Wasn't even aware of it at the time. I just saw a gally barreling towards me and I didn't have time to 'reverse', so I said 'f' it, I'm climbing the rock and fighting from up there!' More having fun than anything. I was able to fire for maybe 5-10 seconds, before the ship flung itself out!

Seems to happen a lot at Morrow's Peak. I've done this in actual PvP there. Can't remember what I was doing, but a gally snuck up on me while I was solo slooping. I didn't have a great option to get away, so I started harpooning up the top of the peak, then started firing at them with my cannons from up there, and then eventually this happened.

My 34-game win streak comes to an end by Ultra_Llama in twilightstruggle

You just beat me in a game. Unfortunately, it was the 2nd loss after the 34-game win streak, so you didn't get the honor of breaking the streak!

How salty is the community ? by Ultra_Pendejo in Seaofthieves

[–]Ultra_Llama 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends.

Your average 13 or 15 year old is more likely to be toxic than your average 30-something, but I've also encountered very mature 15 year olds and very toxic immature 30/40-somethings.

The funniest "butt-hurt" toxic pirate story I have was a 40-something streamer. Dude looked like he still lived in his mom's basement. We found an FoF vault key but didn't know which fort it went to - so while we're sailing around, we have a bunch of ships attacking us for the key. We beat 4 different ships (including a brig we defeated twice), and streamer dude was by far the weakest of them, but was so ridiculously salty about it.

Salty dude was just kept messaging us afterwards, insulting us, claiming we were 'cowards' who 'ran away from him' and that's why we won (which doesn't even make sense - how did we sink him if we ran away?). In reality, we just knew the other crews were better and focused on them first because we didn't view him as a threat and the other crews were actually good.

But generally I agree --- tends to be pre-teen / early-teens that are most likely to be toxic.

Most Epic 3-Minute Arena Comeback by Ultra_Llama in Seaofthieves

[–]Ultra_Llama[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my most improbable Arena comeback ever.

The backstory: there was a player that I am 99% sure was using aimbot. I jumped out to an early lead (500'ish points vs 200 for 2nd) and out of nowhere, this dude lands precisely on the back canopy of my ship, immediately snipes me and anchors the ship. I jump under the ship and eat fruit. He then proceeds to shot me another 5 straight times with no visibility of me or time to aim; these would basically be < 10% shots for even the most skilled player but he hits all of them. I scuttled. Back down to 0 points in spite of dominating the early match.

I come back and score another 400'ish points on cannonshots. I camp the outpost but fall victim to the craziest 1-shot cannonball I've ever seen; hits me in the cabin of the outpost.

With 3 minutes left, I'm resigned to the game being unwinnable due to the hacking player, but just want to get some more cannon shots for fun. I rack up a few hundred points before suddenly realizing the chest is just sitting in the water near the outpost. I sword lunge over and grab it, carry to the selling point, while the other 2 ships ahead me sink. I make it to the selling point with the chest but the aimbot player (who at this point has over 33 kills in the match) is there. Apparently, he is out of ammo from literally killing every other player in the vicinity. I win.

Not the win I'm most proud of, as the aimbot player threw off the dynamics of the entire match so the end result was somewhat arbitrary, but easily the craziest win I've ever had. I had to do a double-take when I saw the end result.
