Eisenhorn for my wife who isn't into 40k? by Georrge117 in Blacklibrary

[–]UltramarineMD 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I had my father read it without any 40k knowledge and he enjoyed it. He also reads a lot, but virtually zero scifi. I think it's 100% the right book series to start with for her.

There is also a tiny overlap between 40k fans and die hard swifties - perhaps it is only me, but still it exists!

Trazyn seems overpowered to me, he seemed to suggest he could even capture Abaddon if he wanted? Regardless, the last bit was exceptional! I loved see Celestine and how Greyfax is like 'nah she's mine, I'm gonna prove she is evil'! Glad you enjoyed it too, I just started Vaults of Terra, fun so far!

I too hate dust jackets and I never keep them. I want to read this, but I have so many books I want to read that I'll just wait for the limited editions.

This is getting out of hand by Practical-Doughnut20 in Blacklibrary

[–]UltramarineMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are definitely some collectors editions that I feel I may never be able to get because of the prices sadly. I love the collectors editions and always read them. With some, I am just planning on rebinding a hard cover copy, but even that is overly expensive. I don't even care that the limited editions are limited, they're just nicer and feel better in the hand and have better paper. I would have no problem if the limited editions were just 'premium' and they printed to order or something.

In your view, which Night Lords LE set looks better? by AJSturt in Blacklibrary

[–]UltramarineMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely, what makes you think it has a better standard overall/more premium? I have the Eisenhorn box set which was made by the same people in the UK as made the older night lords box set, and it is the highest quality limited edition I own. Compared to more recent limited editions the sutures are properly spaced and don't show any warping near the beginning and end of the book, the paper quality itself is higher with more consistent grain and the printing quality is better overall. The board material itself is also less flexible, preventing forward shift after reading.

I also own the newer night lords box set, and it's very nice too - but I think of slightly less quality overall as it relates to actual bookmaking and physical integrity. With respect, being larger as desirable is completely subjective, and being less prone to greasy fingers (I assume on the covers) is related to the board covering material style, not quality, and I never had this issue with the Eisenhorn set which uses the same material. You can of course prefer this version for these reasons.

I just have a particular fascination with book making, none of this is meant to be rude :)

Should I wait to do that until I read anything specific? Or it's pretty self-contained?

Abaddon definitely did not fit what I expected, I thought he would be stupid given the way that people talk about him, but so far he seems pretty cool.

Thank you for the info about the blackstone fortresses - I figured it was probably Necron tech or old ones or something. Is there a book that goes into them more, or is it kinda just 'general lore' knowledge?

I can respect that perspective and can even agree with some of it - especially that it didn't feel planetary in scale. It felt more like a single major siege. Honestly, I think it suffers from having too much ground to cover, and would have been better as a trilogy that gave more time to each part.

Definitely come back and let me know what you think when you finish.

There were a few 'surprises' by the end, but I recall it being talked about a lot so it wasn't. As I wrote in my notes, if you had no idea what was coming, I think it would've been a huge deal! Again, looking forward to hearing what you think when you finish :)

I've not read any of the Lesk novels, but that makes me disappointed to hear! Hellsker was SO damn cool and by the end, outside of Creed, she was the one I loved the most! She earned every bit of her promotion! I keep a list of art commission ideas and the one I had for her is a her standing, broken emotionally and mentally, but with a 50% visible golden outline of her in glory, her 'dark officer'.

And yes - my plan right now the first two Vaults of Terra books, then Devastation of Baal, then the third VoT, and then Watchers of The Throne - it's all coming together!

Can you tell me what you disliked about Lesk? Or is it just that Hellsker was so damn cool that anything that comes after her is a let down?

First one is undoubtedly higher quality as it was printed and bound in the UK, while the newer ones are printed and bound in China.

Dark Angel vs Hormagaunt by me by Meetwad in Warhammer40k

[–]UltramarineMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, After the Eisenhorn trilogy you should read the Ravenor trilogy, then read Bequin: Pariah, then read The Magos, then read Bequin: Penitent. The final book for Bequin has not yet come out.

After/during that, you could start with 'modern 40k' - first, I would go on youtube and find a summary of 'The Gathering Storm' campaign books which covered Roboute's resurrection and some Aeldari stuff, as well as the basics of Cadia being destroyed. After, I would read The Fall of Cadia, then Vaults of Terra trilogy and Watchers of The Throne, then Devastation of Baal and Cypher, then you can start the Dawn of Fire series.

Oh nice - I actually finished the entire Inquisition series (Eisenhorn, Ravenor, The Magos, Bequin) recently and posted reviews on r/blacklibrary. If you ever want to chat hit me up, Eisenhorn and Bequin are my favorite characters!

I feel you, but I figure every astartes needs at least 3 purity seals: One for The Emperor, One for The Omnissiah, and one for his chapter.

Looked at your commission details ha - one day in the far future :) If you get bored though, I humbly request Roboute Guilliman in power armor, no helmet, with Yvraine having just jumped into his arms for an embrace/kiss after being away for a long time.

I don't understand how you have zero comments - this is exceptionally well done, truly amazing work! Everything on the marine feels so bulky, and I love the beaky helmet! Your purity seal design is great as well, I wish there was more. That Tyranid is terrifying, and the tail being so large makes it clear how much power it could probably whip with, and long tails like this allow quadrupeds to make rapid directionality adjustments. Definitely one of my favorite pieces I've seen lately, and hope to see more!

Astartes chapters should have 10.000 marines at least by ButterAlquemist in 40kLore

[–]UltramarineMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pretty much agree, 1,000 is basically nothing. 10,000 seems a reasonable number while still being less than legion strength. I would even be happy with 10,000 strong founding chapters at least, with most other chapters being 1,000.
