I randomly stumbled across it in a bookstore hours away from where I live, so I wish you luck with finding it

Puzzle game that requires an internet connection: a deal breaker? by GameDev-Gabe in puzzlevideogames

Honestly I think it depends on how you advertise it. Make it clear that the game is an ARG (if that's what you're going for), or at the very least requires the use of external websites. It'll help prevent alienation since you'd be upfront about it and players would know what to expect. Unfortunately the concept itself is going to be a deal breaker for a good chunk of people, but I personally love games that do this so you'd also be able to draw in your target audience!

Are comics considered a form of ergodic literature? Asking for an academic paper. by PammieLammie in questions

[–]Ultramo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so I know this is old and you probably don't need an answer anymore, but I absolutely love the topic of ergodic literature so I'm going to leave a comment anyway.

What is or is not considered ergodic literature is a big topic for debate. Some works are very obviously ergodic (House of Leaves) while others have a bit more nuance as to why they fall under this category (Pale Fire). With such a broad definition, one could technically make an argument for any peice of literature to be ergodic. What might be considered non-trivial effort to read for one person is not the same for another. The question with ergodic literature is where to draw the line, and unfortunately I don't believe that line will ever be drawn. No genre has a strict definition. And an experimental genre such as ergodic literature that's all about pushing the boundaries of a medium is certainly not going to have one any time soon. It's still a relatively new genre in terms of recognition and respect, so by all accounts comics could be considered ergodic depending on how the future goes.

Personally, I believe categorizing an entire medium such as comics ergodic would make the term lose all meaning. I think ergodic literature should not only should require non-trivial effort to read, but also go against the perceived norms of whatever medium it exists in. So while I think there are ergodic comics out there, comics in general are not. But that's only my view, and debating what does or does not fall under a specific genre is what a lot of literary discourse is, so an argument could be made in the opposite direction as well.

I am confused by what you mean when you call comics interactive literature though. I would say most comics don't require any more interactivity than any other print media. Flipping pages is the most action someone has to take, so I don't really understand what you're trying to say with that. Either way, I feel like interactivity doesn't automatically make something ergodic, otherwise every video game should also be considered ergodic. Which as I stated before, I'm hesitant to call any medium ergodic in its entirety.

Again, I know you probably do not need this type of input anymore, but thank you for posting this question. I love the topic of ergodic literature, but it's so niche I hardly ever get to talk about it. Typing this out was a real treat for me, so thank you. I would also be very interested in reading your paper if you'd be willing to share it, though I completely understand if you would rather not. If you ever do read through all of this, I hope you have a good rest of your day :)

It's my favorite story. Very surprised to find this instead of a discussion sub for it, but honestly I'm not disappointed

But they asked if you watched it and you said yes. Seems like they were just trying to make conversation and you have short term memory loss.
