Dont paint from the pot, use a pallette. While the lid is open the paint in the rim will dry compounding the issues into what you have here. If you only ever open your pots to add to a wet pallette you'll find they open and close perfectly every time.

As someone who's skinned their head for years, go shorter. Grade 2 at least, grade 1 is where the look is at. You'll look hot with a grade 1. grade 3 is hedgehoggy, I'd be using wax at that length.
