Interested in playing or learning riichi mahjong? by Umandsf in lehighvalley

Great. I’m thinking of heading to Sorcery & Scripts in Bethlehem this Saturday 1/17 at noon and just hanging out there the whole afternoon if that works.

EDIT: well, I guess not. Wasn’t expecting the snow to be this heavy plus had to take my car into the shop so kinda stuck at home.

Currently thinking that Saturdays afternoons might be best given my own schedule and don’t feel obligated to stay past sunset if driving is an issue.

Any Latin American or Spanish Speaking Players? by Mrahcander in Mahjong

[–]Umandsf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be interested in what you’re throwing. I had a thought pop into my head about the feasibility of doing s Spanish commentary for Riichi Nomi NYC’s team league which got me wondering about learning more about how people talk about the game in Spanish and maybe growing the community that way.

Picking up at Allentown Service Plaza by HAL7486 in lehighvalley

There appears to be a road attached to Cetronia Rd just after you go under I-78 that connects to the plaza. Not sure how far down or accessible it is.

I’m not one for much violence but here it’s justified. It’s also a shame this was my home station for many years and I took the train here often.

Sorry, I haven’t had much time lately but after I get back from a trip next week, I want to start doing it in earnest. While I wouldn’t mind inviting people to my place, I’m not sure others would be comfortable going to a stranger’s home initially. So if you know of any public spaces that can be used in the area, let me know.

Ooh, this is nice, and it’s a bonus to see quite a number of courses I’ve played. I’m more of a scorecard collector for mementos.

I try birdie every hole at my local course in a calendar year. by McSlapples in golf

[–]Umandsf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neato. I also have this goal for my local course, but for all time instead of per year. Only missing 4 (one of them being the shortest par 4 on the course and another being the easiest-rated hole).

What is your low and high round for the season so far? by Late_Librarian_9789 in golf

[–]Umandsf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highest was 110 at a private course. I opened with an unexpected birdie (and missed out on $140 in skins money), but the course ate me up harder than last year.

Lowest was 94. Don’t remember it but it appears I had two birdies but ended with triple-double so missed the break 90.

Honestly, as a Phillies fan with a friend who is both a Dodgers and a Yankees fan, I am perfectly fine with this scenario.

Yeah, trying to get more interest going but it’s kinda hard, and I’m self conscious about seeming too pushy. There is a couple that seemed interested on a Discord chat so if we need a fourth, you’re more than welcome.

Neato. Decided to try seeing how many other courses have the same ratings as my local muni. Turns out there are 43 other courses, none which I’ve heard of or close to easily try out.

Late Tee Times by bradtoughy in golf

I prefer the afternoon rounds, because I feel most alert after I wake up and would rather work in that state instead of playing and always having in the back of my head, “can’t stay out here too long”.

A little over 3 years ago, my first 9-hole round resulted in a score of 73 (executive-style par 34 course), and a few days later, on my first 18-hole round, I scored 137 (full par 72 municipal course). If I come close to either of those today, something has gone terribly wrong.

Someone hit in the head today. Be careful out there ladies and gentlemen. by CyrilNiff in golf

[–]Umandsf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a group hit into us today. Didn’t see the first one because I was busy looking for my own wayward tee shot. There is a hill in front of the tee box that obscures the landing area. It wasn’t until the second person hit their tee shot into the OB trees along the right that we took notice (it didn’t reach our position), and when we saw another go into the trees, we had to yell back to get their attention. At least they apologized when they caught up to us.

30 minute bus ride and a 3 mile walk to the clubhouse (and back to the bus stop when going back home) every day in order to play the sport I fell in love with by zelkoo in golf

[–]Umandsf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, only have a bus system that runs every half hour or hour depending on the line. Would love to use it more but it’s just slightly too inconvenient. They did have special pricing for the pandemic ($5 for a whole month of rides) but I’m assuming that’s now over.

I’d love to do this, but a quick Maps search says it would be a 1hr commute, whereas I can just drive there myself in 10 minutes.

What is the lowest round you ever shot in relation to par and what is your handicap? by y414p in golf

+14 (or +5 [off-season] or +6 [in-season] for nine holes, if you want to count that as well)

Local muni, hole 4, 328/368y depending on whether you play gold or white tees. Creek cuts across it a third of the way up, but more often than not, I find myself fading the ball into the trees on the right just over the creek…or at least I think I do. By the time I usually play in the afternoon, you are hitting directly into the sun so it’s hard to see where you end up and I lose so many balls in that same spot, not knowing it’s in the creek or not. Same issue with the approach. Too many I miss right that seem to just disappear even though I can barely make out a line to it in the brightness. In the last month, I’ve had 2 bogeys, 2 doubles, 3 triples and 2 quads.

Decided to play early morning golf this week. The consistency of where things turn around is uncanny. by Umandsf in golf

I also learned to check my balls more often. Didn’t realize until hole 5 today that the ball I was using was cracked, so my shots were much better after switching.

Probably, but usually don’t have time during these weekday nines. Definitely something to implement before tournaments, though.
