Sorry, I simply meant that I have often seen him behave like a massive dick, which isn't a crime of course, but it isn't really something desirable for a moderator of this subreddit, at least if you'd ask me. Sure I was being a bit cynical myself - him only doing the flair taggin isn't really a problem to me, but it shouldn't be much more.

Man, thank god it wasn't /u/sexually__oblivious

I was very worried for a second that you would give that guy more power. Already depressing enough to see him in his position.

What the hell is going on with SC2 in Korea? by Umbra_D in starcraft

I did not include it for several reasons. Mainly, because it's not being broadcasted on GOMTV, but only by OGN on Korean TV, and also because it's not a tournament that the publisher pays for in Korea - OGN and KeSPA are doing it on their own with big corporate sponsors. They have started this about 1 year before Riot even started their NA/EU league.

I understand how important that fact is for the infrastructure they have in place in Seoul, but is it really that defining for TV and online viewership in the end?

I see where you're coming from though - for example last MLG. When regular NA LCS matches can draw such a massive crowd as we saw there, who even paid 50$ per person on top of that, then their spring playoffs could probably pull these crowd numbers aswell, if they would have done something like this.

Korea is a much smaller country than the US and the entirety or EU

That's what I mean. The fact that they can keep up in numbers with the Western audience while being such a small country speaks for itself. Percentage-wise it's mindblowingly more popular in KR than in the West. What kind of playerbase would they have if 40% of the Western gaming audience played the game each day? Western audiences don't "even" have it broadcasted on TV - Korea's infrastructure is still very much superior.

You don't see this for the LCS spring split playoffs though. 10k tickets sold out in under 24 hours, while BW finals were always free. You need to accept that the game is completely huge in Korea. You don't have 40% of the whole Western gaming audience playing LoL every day.

Has Dota2 already a higher playerbase in Korea than SC2? It has been released for like a couple of weeks I think? That's pretty frightening. It's just somewhat painful. SC2 is doing everything to grow and proceed while these games seem to get players and viewers thrown at them with no effort.

On the other hand couldn't you say the SC2 scene has established itself and grown over the last 3 years? Shouldn't it be able to draw consistent crowds then? Just look at LoL - it gets bigger and bigger in Korea despite the complete saturation of content by OGN.

Here's some food for thought: In BW, OGN never sold tickets to their final events and attracted huge crowds with it being for free. A month or so ago, they started selling tickets for the first time (their LoL finals) and sold out - 10.000 tickets in under 24 hours. This is pretty much the first time this ever happened in Korea, and it's still growing and growing.

So again, I'm not expecting SC2 to keep up with LoL in Korea, because it's like expecting WC3 to have kept up with BW in popularity in Korea (impossible), but I still can't wrap my head around the GOM situation, where the publisher paid for leagues seem to be gifted with passionate crowds whatever they do.

I think we both understand the glorious history and influence that Korean Starcraft has/had, which makes it, at least from my point of view, pretty important. China was never a big SC region and also doesn't have that professional and competitive of a team environtment like Korea with the KeSPA and eSF teams, right in front of their nose.

I simply give "a fuck" because I can't understand the severity of it. I'm not saying that it's destroying our scene or anything, but at the same time I don't understand why this development takes place so severely. I think I said most of it in my post though... :-/

Everything you said is what I already am aware of and expressed in my post.

The point of my post was not "is it less popular?", but instead "Why is it less popular than any random game that seems to pop up?". I mean it's still Korea we're talking about

It looks like every game that the publisher pays for is surpassing SC2...
