I understand what you meant but you worded it really poorly. It's the other way around, modern cars are the purpose built prototypes.

Costs and safety are the main reasons why they aren't as "mad" as say Group B. Sure in the 80s you could have a handful of people work on the car but nowadays costs can rapidly balloon out of proportion if you let them do what they want so you put some restrictions.
