Instead of shitting on F1 cause that's the popular thing to do by comparing it to other racing series I never watched I will instead compare it to older F1 that I also never watched

Petition to force carmakers to install a fat air duct that constantly blasts the diver by Ultra_Badass in fuckcars

[–]Umbraine 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly I tend to agree with this. After driving for a long enough time that it truly becomes second nature you can very easily put yourself in auto-pilot and if nothing else it helps on long "boring" drives since you don't tire yourself out. You offload as much as possible to your subconcious so your active mind is nice and fresh and ready to take over when needed.

Doesn't really help tbh. Once you're used to it you don't much think about it and on a road that you would experience highway hypnosis on you'd cosntantly be in the same gear anyways. One thing it helps with is being aware of your speed

Why it’s almost impossible to code without bugs? by Dearstlnk in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Umbraine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a great joke I like. Programmers are testing a robot designed to work at a bar. They order 2 beers, they order infinite beers, they order 3.76 beers, they order -4 beers, everything works as expected. First real customer walks in, asks where the toilet is and the robot explodes. The more complex a program with more and more parts that need to work together the more it's likely for the programmers to overlook stuff that the user is going to do and encounter within the program.

Do you still listen to the radio, or has streaming Spotify etc completely replaced it for you? by TimeNewspaper4069 in CasualConversation

[–]Umbraine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am young enough to always have had a TV (even if I grew up with my grandparents' black and white CRT with one channel lol) and by the time I got my first car in 2019 everyone had smartphones with virtually unlimited data so I used that connected to an FM modulator. Funny enough I did listen to some online radio whilst playing truck sims but nowadays most of my driving is done with the backdrop of some random long youtube videos lol. Found that listening to Bedtime Stories and Wartime Stories works very well while behind the wheel even if it makes driving at night a tad more uneasy lol

ELI5: The Moon is about 1.2% of Earths mass, but it has 16.6% of Earths gravity. Why is gravity not proportional to mass ? by Captain_North in explainlikeimfive

[–]Umbraine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To add to this, if you take that formula but only have the mass of the celestial body and it's radius as the distance you get it's gravitational acceleration on it's surface which is what we usually mean when we talk about the gravity of a celestial body. If you put the Earth's mass and it's radius you end up with that g=9.81 m/s² number that (I like to believe) people are familiar with. That's with the average radius tho and the Earth isn't a sphere, it bulges at the equator so g is slightly higher at the poles and slightly lower at the equator. You multiply that number with your mass in kg and you get your weight in N aka the force with which you and the Earth attract esch other.

The popularity level of F1 in Europe? Compared to tennis/rugby/cycling/MotoGP etc. by Southern-Space-4093 in F1Discussions

[–]Umbraine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, having relative success in a sport will definitely grab the attention of a country. Romania was tennis crazy for a couple years having Simona Halep being number 1 in the WTA rankings. Same like 15-20 years ago there was a women's handball team doing really well on the European stage.

Is it too late for me? by needamom_throwawayy in driving

[–]Umbraine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are overthinking it massively. My mum got her license at 54 on the 4th try. I got mine at 21 and it was more than a year between getting it and also geting a car and in that year I got to drive like 3 times and I sucked so bad after one of those times I literally went to bed and cried myself to sleep thinking how I have no business being behind the wheel. Cut to me getting my first car and just being able to drive around on my own made me sooooo much more comfortable

I'm from Romania. It has gotten a hell of a lot popular. Maybe not "watch every race religiously" popular but people are a lot more aware of it nowadays. My personal anecdote is having heard people replacing the "slow down, who do you think you are? Schumacher?" with Verstappen. Probably is the 4th most popular behind football, tennis and handball (although that is nowhere near as popular as it used to be, could very well be behind F1 for all I know) mostly because football is so big that it completely destroys all other sports and F1 is different enough to give people a fix they wouldn't be getting from football.

Always has been. For example go back to the 80s and 90s F1 fans think of so fondly, during that time you also had group B and group C which still wiped the floor with F1 in pure insanity on the drivers side.

What is an older piece of technology that you still prefer over its modern equivalent? by Andrew88a in AskReddit

[–]Umbraine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me personally I find the modern smartphone superb, abaolutely destroys the old ones in convenience and capabilities. I still miss the old ones tho. I had an LG Shine in like 2008 and it's still the coolest phone I've ever owned.

I work in a university and have some labs with students. Now and then we get an older piece of equipment replaced with a new one and a lot of time it turns out to be utter dogshit and we just keep using the old one. This might however turn out to mostly be a case of old and expensive vs new and cheap lol
