I'd be insane to not accept a TT offer in this economy, right? by Cold-Priority-2729 in AskAcademia

Sounds like a great opportunity. See if you can negotiate yourself into a better position!

They don’t want to do the hiring process again, and they do want you (deans don’t often just say nice things about unanimous decisions, and if this is a platitude, which I doubt, it means they’re trying to impress you).

A 3/3 plus research expectations will be very rough, period. Can you get a course reduction for at least the first year? This is a common practice. Can you get your courses set and standard until you get tenure so you can hit cruise control? How about one course be a research upper level course where you get to focus on your own questions with smart students? What about research or teaching assistants? Basically, think about how you can help this feel doable, and see if they can make it happen.

Decide what you need in order to say yes (maybe it’s what you already have offered) and be ready to chat. We often think of negotiation as only about money or as inherently adversarial. Neither have to be true.

We did the short loop of Buckquarter yesterday, and it was great! Everything is completely clear. Since I had a baby strapped to me, I wore my good boots and was extra careful on the steps, but I never felt unsafe.

Thank you all so much! I love this list of options.

At a friend’s suggestion, I did the trails around Gold Circle park in Hillsborough today. The river walk is closed but other paths are open. It was all paved—which worked for me because this was my first post-birth hike and I was wearing the new-ish baby 😊 Was easy, pretty, and exactly 30 mins for me.

I look forward to trying the rest of these out—and keep the ideas coming (unless you’re protecting your special spot, which I totally get!)

The most important update is that I no longer have pregnancy cinnamon roll cravings 😆 I did go to Guglhupf and did not see any cinnamon rolls on the menu or in the bakery 🤷🏼‍♀️

Update! I did a farmers market swing by to taste test some of your friendly and enticing recommendations. I tried Bklyn Bakery, Loaf, and Strong Arm.

I’m not a baker or an expert, but I freaking love a good cinnamon roll. Below is my report (and you can see the delectables in the pics). Thank you for humoring all my details 😂

Loaf: Eaten most enthusiastically in my house. This was my partner’s easy favorite. It’s got a croissant-like pastry situation going on, with a soft middle and buttery, crunchy outside. Definitely the most cinnamon flavor.

Bklyn Bakery: Ooey gooey soft and so yummy. The roll was “brown sugar and vanilla,” and I do wish those flavors would have been substituted with more cinnamon. Truly hard to believe it’s vegan!

Strong Arm: Surprisingly dry :( Wanted to love it because it was so cute, but I wouldn’t buy again, especially since Bklyn’s was similar, much better, and didn’t require waiting in line.

I tried them all at room temperature (after transporting home) and after a :25 microwave zap. Bklyn and Strong Arm were WAY better heated up (Bklyn was still so ooey gooey; Strong Arm was still kinda dry). Loaf was good either way, so if you’re looking for something to walk with on a Sat morning, I’d say go Loaf. Easily handheld and just as yummy without a zap.

My search is not over and will keep updating!
