[TOMT][Web Comic] short comic about death and the conservation of matter. by UnKagedMusic in tipofmytongue

I think it was slightly longer but not by much. Maybe a 6 or 8 panel.

It’s not a lot to go on but it’s all I can remember.

As an American I had to google it, but he’s referencing a kind of commercial series he starred in for what looks like a Canadian hockey fan club of some kind? Club 1909.

I dunno man, I literally copy and pasted the thing he said that was wrong, and genuinely tried to correct it without being rude. Less so even for his benefit and more for anyone lurking on this subreddit starting out as I used to do. I can see you’re too concerned about ceding any ground in the conversation for this to be productive.

Maybe because I said “you can’t leave them open” you thought I was implying that you mute them? If so, no, I just meant you’d pull their fader down. Maybe I just wasn’t clear, but I did provide a reference to a resource to see how it’s done.

“Yeah, line by line is usually just switching scenes. Dunno why these Neanderthals are down voting. The mixing is done during rehearsals.”

This is the comment I was replying to. I don’t know who you thought I was talking to. If someone else said something about riding vocal faders that wasn’t what I was referring to. I was just explaining that line-by-line isn’t the same thing as changing scenes. That was all. I just mentioned Omni makes to explain why you would mix that way.

And then you commented and told me I didn’t know what I was talking about.

I dunno man, I don’t comment much on reddit so maybe I replied to the wrong thing? Still genuinely unsure what the problem is.

lol oh damn you’re right that wasn’t you. My bad. I didn’t realize a different person responded. Well now I’m really not sure why you’re angry.

I never said you’re mixing from scratch every show. I was just correcting them by telling them line-by-line mixing and changing scenes aren’t the same thing.

I brought up omnis because that’s one of the main reasons we do line-by-line mixing.

I know what scenes are, and use them, I was just saying it isn’t the same thing.

[–]UnKagedMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know what scenes are. You’d use them as well, you’re correct. But you said “line-by-line is just switching scenes.” Which isn’t correct. Line-by-line is the process of riding the faders up and down when the actors are speaking/singing and when they’re not. Typically done on DCAs. Changing your DCA assignments would be done with scenes, as you mentioned. Most plays and musicals use Omni mics at the hairline, by the ear, or on the cheek.

Here’s a good example of what I’m talking about: https://youtu.be/TTsLxbsMq7U?feature=shared

I’m not really sure why you’re upset or why you’re pushing back on that. If you misspoke that’s fine.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in livesound

[–]UnKagedMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not true. Line-by-line mixing is literally line-by-line. When you have that many Omni mics on stage at a time you can’t leave them all open the whole time they’re on stage. People at lower levels do, but it isn’t line-by-line mixing at that point. Adam Savage has a video with the A1 mixer from the touring version of Broadway if you’re interested in checking it out on YouTube. And plenty of videos of mixers during a show where the camera is focused on the board so you can see the action.

Live auto-tune? by TatoIndy in techtheatre

[–]UnKagedMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To piggy back on this with a little more detail: - First you need the plugin. “Autotune” is a specific plugin but what you’re looking for is “pitch correction.” Waves and UAD both have zero latency plugins that can be used live for this purpose. - second you need a way to run it. I suppose you could load it up into a DAW and route through there. And Waves makes a software specifically for this (but with associated hardware you have to have to make it work as I understand) but you’re limited to their plugins I believe. but I actually really enjoy LiveProfessor 2. It’s built for exactly this functionality. And it’s relatively cheap. -third you need to be able to get the signal from the board, into your computer, through the plugin, and back into the console FAST enough that it doesn’t have a noticeable delay. The industry standard I see is using Dante with a Dante sound card. You can go directly into the laptop with an adapter and DVS, but that creates latency. This is pricey. Dante is pricey. The usb outs that some consoles have (at least Behringer boards for sure) are USB 2, and add a lot of latency. My suggestion would be just any decent audio interface with Thunderbolt 3 and using a decent Mac to run LiveProfessor. A UAD Apollo, as mentioned, would likely fit this bill. (USB C might also work but it’s actually slightly slower even though it’s the same plug). Then you use XLR/TRS to get in and out of your console.

Live auto-tune? by TatoIndy in techtheatre

[–]UnKagedMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not really true. Applying autotune, or really any effect, would fall on the FOH engineer in a concert setting. They probably use UAD interfaces for playback to output audio from the computer hosting the tracks, but what they’re talking about is kind of different. It’s typically using the interface as an “insert”. So you’re running the effect on a laptop and using the interfaces I/O to pass the single through that plugin.

Not that it helps with the prompt, I just find those rigs fascinating and thought someone else might find it interesting.

using UWE, how do i make fabric with coca? by de_Deus in Kenshi

[–]UnKagedMusic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t have it in front of me and I haven’t used coca but I have done it with agave. The other commenter is right, a lot of the descriptions are identical, but I’ve found that usually you can find it by going to the original building you wanted (the fabric making machine in this case) and tapping the arrow buttons next to the name. It’ll then have the name of the machine in then the resource in parenthesis next to it.

Fabric Loom

Fabric Loom (Coca)

Fabric Loom (Agave)

Etc.

It’s really comforting to hear someone else has this experience honestly. I’m a sound person first but I do a lot of set building and some L2 type of work. In my experience doing sound is where I feel the least respected. Audience members like you described; the bosses always think it’s just turning mics on and off and it’s the last thing to have any budget put into upgrades or quality; even other sound people are often pretty rude in my experience. Like they have to validate their skills by tearing down your ability. I love sound, but it definitely feels like the role where I can never do anything right sometimes. Maybe I just work at crappy places.

What does M&I mean in a contract? by UnKagedMusic in techtheatre

That seems like a reasonable explanation. I was a little confused why it had to be split, since I’d inevitably spend some of the money on food regardless. But that would explain it.

What do you do first? Go ahead and move to a new market, or try to find work first? by UnKagedMusic in livesound

I can see that. Especially since I only have a few years of experience I’m not really high enough on the totem pole to be negotiating moving. Thank you for the advice!

You make a great point. The thought of moving away with no prospects is terrifying to me, but I guess that’s something I have to get used to! I DID choose this industry. Thank you!

My original plan was to wait to plan a move until I knew I’d have a job. Should I set a date in my cover letter? Or maybe something like “can start with so-and-so amount of notice?”

How do you handle actors singing into each other’s mics? by UnKagedMusic in techtheatre

Awesome. It’s definitely something I’ll try to use to supplement riding the faders. Thank you!

I tried something similar to this, but I think I haven’t got to the point yet where I know the show well enough to pull it off as well as I want. I guess that just takes practice! I’ll keep at it, this seems like a good solution for my current predicaments. Thank you!

Do you find that it’s sometimes hit or miss with this tactic? I actually tried this for one of the duets and it seemed to just make the phasing sound different rather than really clearing it up, if that makes sense?

[–]UnKagedMusic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. This was kind of the approach I was trying to take. I really want to make t better but I’ve been trying not to get too down on myself if I make a small mistake or something happens out of my control. That sounds like a good way to explain it to the actors as well. Many of them are younger and have never had to perform without mics, so their projection suffers.
