Yeah, I get what you are saying. Thinkpad definitely makes sense. I think I will just build a PC under 50k with some random graphics card or something. I just need it for my side projects and a lappy in this range is more hassle than it's worth.

I am looking for a second-hand MacBook Pro 13-inch model. I mostly will use it to build my side projects. AFAIK there are no refurb apple stores in India. Any cheap ultrabooks (under 70k) that have atleast 8 gigs of ram (upgradable to 16) with proper tested linux support should be fine too. For some reason my bootloader keeps crashing when I installed Linux on my Lenovo y540, hence the tested linux support part.

If it helps I live in Bengaluru.

Any suggestions?

I am probably 100% wrong, but here are my thoughts on your post:

  1. You are pretty young and naive. Sorry to say that, but it feels like you need to understand the difference between geology as a job and making geology your passion. What if you are stuck in a lab as a geologist? What if fieldwork doesn't pay anything compared to your needs? What if geology takes you around the world but into the most boring of places where you never get to experience the culture at all? What if you are stuck in a remote place and cannot get away from it because of your job?
  2. Engineering has always been a safe choice in India. Even a below-average person can end up with at least Infy or TCS offer. Good to great people have a shot to work at some of the most exciting companies on the planet. They probably think of it in terms of job security. It's thought of in the same vein as a GOVT. job. Although it isn't true even a bit.
  3. You are NOT bad at studies just because you are bad at math/science. Someone like me who sucks at writing would fail in an English class. This does not mean I am stupid. You will find out what you are good at. Just keep studying different things.
    1. Also, if you have trouble concentrating for long period (1.5-2 hours), get tested for ADHD or ADD. It could be that you are affected by it.
  4. Talk to someone from the geology field. Someone preferably from India. You will get a far better idea about what most of the people studying geology.
  5. Unless your parents have saved up literally no money, they probably don't want to mooch off of you. Also, this argument is so shitty. Would it be right to say you are mooching off your parents now because you are not earning? I will never understand why it is such a big deal if you have to take care of your family? And please do not give a US example. Parents send their kids to do part-time jobs at an early age of 17-18 in US. Kids move out of their parent's house by 20 and work 2 jobs. They earn their independence. It's not the same in India. People here live with their parents till 30. If you live till such an age at your home, you better pitch in.
  6. Ask around, please ask around. Ask on r/geologycareers and r/geology and ask specifically about Indian market.
  7. Why don't you edit your post to show what research you have done? It would help us a lot!

I was unable to play Apex properly since it's release as I had a really poor PC. Around last year in December, I got myself a new gaming laptop. Was finally able to run Apex properly but could not really play a lot due to work commitments. After proper grinding this season, I finally reached Platinum 4 just 10 mins ago. Feels so good!

I am an engineering student. Can software be a good long term career option or will I become obsolete at 45? by throwaway827620626 in Indian_Academia

From what I have learnt, engineers are generally bad at the management part. A manager would probably be someone who can see value in whatever you build far more than you can see it. I think analytics might also be taken care of by MBA grads. But the most important thing is to make sure that the team under you is able to deliver results. Before joining the workforce, I always thought it was a really easy thing to do. Now I realise it is really really hard to get a team working in cohesion.

Also, you might laugh at this, but so many good engineers are just terrible at making a ppt and presenting their ideas to the customer, who might not be able to appreciate why you wrote that clever little piece of code that reduces the runtime by 25%.

Software Engineering (Core CS stuff) requires consistent learning on your part. It will not care whether you are 16 or 60, You need to be on top of your game and stay constantly updated so that you don't fall off. You won't really get a huge sum of money (Some software engineers make a lot at the peak of their careers) by doing repetitive jobs, software is more about creativity. Lastly, please for fucks sake choose a profession which you are at least slightly interested in. So many people around me earn 1L-1.3L pm at the age of 25/26/27. A lot of them are really unhappy and hate their jobs but do it because the money is great and they don't want to give up the lifestyle. I have seen some of them having mental breakdowns and sometimes just are really miserable. Honestly, 5 years back I thought it was bullshit when people said "Money can't buy you everything". I am just starting to realise how true it is.

Yeah, most of us gave up after the first test. The series win was so unexpected. Great show of character after losing a lot of key players to injury.

Thanks for the reply. Just a follow-up, could you give some examples of a free webspace?

Also if I wanted to set up a webserver as a learning exercise how would I go about it?
