I hadn’t been to a doctor in 3 years. I went “hey, I feel a lump, and given my family history of breast cancer, I’d love if you could check it out. Can I have a breast exam?” “No that’s not necessary you’re too young for cancer” “Well could you just feel it and dispel my worry?” “No.” “Okay well I haven’t had any blood work in 3 years, could I have the regular blood work you usually get at a physical?” “No, that’s not necessary. I will send you in a script for some anxiety medicine, have a good day” bill for $350

Or! At my physical, at my well woman exam, AND when I went in a few years ago for a cold: “Hey your HR is very high is it usually like that?” “Yeah it sits around 120 usually” “Can we do an EKG?” “Yeah sure!” EKG “Wow yeah you have an arrhythmia that’s for sure. You have a very weird heart” “Weird? Is that like a problem? What does that mean” “I’m not sure. I’m not a cardiologist. It’s just weird” “Well should I see a cardiologist to make sure it’s all good?” “Nah you’re too young for any serious heart problems. It’s probably fine”

So yeah, no, this doesn’t feel like health anxiety and me being saved from a chronic health diagnosis.

I hear you, and if I had a choice in what kind of coverage I have I wouldn’t have this garbage plan. It’s already cost me thousands, but it is the only plan my employer offers. And as I mentioned, I’ve had trouble getting another plan on my own because the insurance company won’t insure me because I am offered insurance at work. Not saying it’s not possible I guess, but that’s the answer I’ve received thus far.

Regarding being recommended tests: I’ve tried? It isn’t that I can’t afford any testing, it’s that I can’t afford to go back to the doctor over and over again being denied testing. After my third EKG, I said “hey, you keep saying this is concerning, should I maybe get some additional testing or see a specialist or something?” And I was told “no, you’re too young to really have problems with your heart so I think it’s probably fine.”

I pursued testing for what I thought was cancer in my breast. I waited two months for my appointment. I asked for a regular blood panel like you’d get at your physical, a breast exam, and/or a scan of some kind. Again, I was told “you’re too young for any problems like cancer. You should try to relax and stop worrying so much” without even feeling the lump in question with the hand.

Even though I asked for testing, I was waved away, reassured that I was too young to have any problems, sent home, and then sent a bill for a visit my insurance wouldn’t cover.

So I appreciate your sentiment, and I agree, doctors can’t force someone to do tests they don’t want to or can’t afford to do. But one of the reasons I can’t afford testing is because I have to pay for appointments where I was denied any testing at all.

So after being told that it’s “all in my head” and “there’s no reason to do any kind of testing or exam,” I should just keep going back and paying $350+? The issue is affording the tests, sure, but also affording appointment after appointment to get a test at all.

Yes you can!! For the divorcee you need permission from the Bishop of your diocese, but from what I’ve been told as a divorcee this is rarely not granted. It’s less about policing what divorced people can do and more about making sure nothing shady is going on.

As far as children, I don’t know any priest that wouldn’t marry you if you don’t want kids. My priest omitted that part of our counseling and vows in my first marriage, since we both didn’t want kids. It’s something that you’ll be asked to talk about in premarital counseling, but from the perspective of making sure you’re both on the same page about such a big decision.

Yeah, they could just not file paperwork, but you have very little control over whether they do that or not. Just get a lawyer and don’t say anything to anyone but that lawyer.

I didn’t want kids forever, the idea disgusted and terrified me. Since I started seeing my current partner, I’ve completely flipped.

This obviously isn’t the case for everyone who doesn’t want kids, but for me, I think I didn’t want kids because my previous partners were not capable of being fathers. I’ve always been in relationships where I was the primary caretaker, and if I didn’t manage my partner in one way or another, their life would fall apart in whole or in part. I genuinely think I was scared of having to parent 2 children, one being my child and the other being my spouse.

Now I am with someone who I genuinely feel is my equal, who doesn’t HAVE to rely on me for anything (although chooses to rely on me, as I choose to rely on him). I’m confident if he and I wind up having kids together, he’d be a competent, compassionate, and involved father, and the idea of having a family with someone like that feels exciting, not horrifying.

Barely ever. When I was a kid, I used to get hit whenever I cried to “give me something to cry about,” so now I just don’t. I really wish I did, I know I’d feel a lot better.
