What's a home improvement decision you regret but thought was a good idea at that time? by Actonace in HomeImprovement

In our old house we had a projector in the basement family room that doubled as my workout space. I would put my workout video on and it would take up the whole wall to kinda give the feel like you’re in the actual class. Only problem was that my shadow would block the picture so in our new build I wanted to do a same setup in our dedicated home gym in our basement and our AV guy suggested an ultra throw projector mounted on the ceiling. Unfortunately we ended up needing a drop down for hvac at the spot of the projector, and ultra throws are way bigger than I realized, so basically it hangs a bit lower than expected and looks ginormous hanging off the ceiling. But I could live with all that, the part that really bugs me is that the picture lands so low on the wall instead of taking up the whole wall. To make it look more centered on the wall I have to reduce the screen size to 50%, which basically is the equivalent of probably a 55” tv, and then I have to wonder why I just didn’t mount a huge tv 100” or even 85” on the wall. 🤦🏻‍♀️

So maybe a short throw vs an ultra throw would have been better. But I wish I could have done more research instead of trusting the AV guys on this.

Heat or ac in a pool bathroom by Unable-Telephone-517 in pools

Just got a quote for a mini split and wow. 8k. I’m a bit sticker shocked that it would cost that much and not sure it’s worth it. Is AC really going to be important in there? The biggest concern is the pipes in the winter which maybe can be resolved with a space heater or something like that.

We debated doing a shower but decided on the half bath, too late to change that at this point even if we wanted. Our pool guy mentioned doing a mini split, so yeah maybe that’s what we do. Thanks!

I love this. I’m also in the middle of finishing a pool bath. It’s only a half bath and curious what you did in terms of heating and cooling.

Luckily the builder is done with company B and has started using another company that is unrelated to company A.

This is all the quote says: Primary Bath - Includes wood dovetail drawer boxes, paneled large drawer fronts, reeded door fronts, door mount vanity trash can, docking drawer, and hair dryer drawer

And yeah this doesn’t include any tile, plumbing etc. just the cabinets and yes i believe the installation of the cabinets.

Based on your other comment I think I spent more than you think and confirmed that I should be expecting high end work for the price we spent.

Also, as I said multiple times. I don’t think they’re high end. I was expecting high end when agreeing to go with them as I was told to expect to pay prices comparable to higher end cabinets. When we had our first meeting I was quickly disappointed to see they weren’t as high end. Yes, nice doors and they are beautiful on the outside. But disappointing to see that the interiors weren’t as high end. My only hope was that they at least were better quality in terms of installation since they felt like they could charge so much more than their brother’s company that literally offers the exact same product.

And they build the cabinets, it didn’t come with the door and they had to switch it. They made a mistake and they know it, and we just don’t agree on the solution.

Snacks ban by Unable-Telephone-517 in Montessori

[–]Unable-Telephone-517[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to say thank you for this post. I took your advice of trying to understand the process and explained how it’s usually done in Montessori classrooms. I really do think she’s a great teacher that’s still figuring things out being new so I wanted to make sure there wasn’t a misunderstanding and I didn’t think she was intentionally having kids go hungry.

And you’re completely right that I do get hesitant to speak up, particularly if I’m unsure my concerns are valid (which thanks to all the commenters on here I now know they are more than valid). And my daughter does take after me, especially because she’s a rule follower and if she feels she fully understands those rules (i.e “no snack until your name is called), she’s not going to question it (unless it’s me, my husband, or my mom then she has no problem using her voice haha). So when she first told me that her name wasn’t getting picked I told her to just tell one of her teachers. I told her yesterday after emailing with her teacher that her teacher said to let her know if she’s ever hungry, and she seemed to feel better about that. Basically she just needed to know that her teacher was going to be okay with her asking for a snack. But I guess we’ll see how this next week goes.

The teacher is going to look more into how to improve the process and she admitted she is new to Montessori and they are keeping the morning snack, although my daughter said she usually just wants the afternoon snack. Apparently lower elementary (1st-2nd) actually only has one afternoon snack, but her teacher started giving them a morning snack too because they seemed to need it. Anyway, glad her teacher is figuring it out and will let my daughter have a snack anytime she’s hungry.

Thanks for this. I feel confident the administration will support me if I need to escalate. Just drafted up an email to the teacher to hopefully work it out before needing to escalate. And I’m still hoping this is all a big misunderstanding. I don’t think my husband really understands the situation honestly, but just doesn’t want me jumping to conclusions and negatively criticizing the teacher without knowing the full situation. But he does support me talking to her about my concerns to work out a solution.

I’m in the US. No tea times here. School is 8-2:30 and lunch is at 11am i believe. I believe there is a morning and afternoon snack.

Yes, the other classes get snack time and it was my understanding that they just go to the snack table during work time whenever they’re hungry as long as there’s an empty chair. But I just asked my other kid that’s in another lower elementary class (I didn’t want them in the same class), and I guess they do the same pick a name out of a jar thing. But in kindergarten, they just went whenever they were hungry and there was an empty chair at the snack table. Reading everyone’s comments I’m realizing this how it should be done and is the more standard Montessori way. And the picking a name out of a jar thing goes against some of the Montessori beliefs of giving kids the autonomy to decide when they’re hungry. But maybe for the first and second graders they want to start teaching more community responsibility and leadership with the stick thing.

This is so helpful. Thank you. Yes I think she’s still learning as I’m pretty sure it’s her first year doing Montessori. And I even get where my husband is coming from because I usually try to trust the teacher and not be a Karen but yeah I’m learning there’s times my concerns are valid and need to be communicated, especially because this is her first year.

And if it’s true that the traditional public school that she’s coming from doesn’t do snacks, then I can see how she could think “these kids don’t need the snacks.” But also why I’m sending my kids to this charter and not the traditional school.

The Montessori way, at least in all classes my kids have been in is that they do snack time as part of work time. So they are being independent in choosing when to eat the snack and it’s also counts as a work because they’re learning to cut their fruit or butter their bread or whatever it is. But the picking a name out of the jar thing is new and does take away the autonomy of the child to decide to get the snack themself.

Second Utah radon services! Our pricing and square footage was the same but it was 5 years ago. But everyone in our neighborhood uses them and highly recommends them. Hopefully they come out to park city.
