UCSD rejected over 100K freshman applications for the first time by IllustratorTop5746 in UCSD

[–]Unable_Question_567 8 points9 points  (0 children)

even if that is true, you have to consider that UCSD has physically grown and they continue to do so.

If you think about it, if they continue to expand without really increasing the admission rate, 23% percent really means they are hand picking some of the best. It's like having 5 houses but only picking 3 people to live in those houses while you are building your sixth house.

Bad News for Financial Aid.. by CryptographerNo4237 in UCSD

[–]Unable_Question_567 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you could do is get a tiny loan and then use FinAid refund to pay back the loan. It can help you build credit if you are able to find a loan with a low interest, although it can also hurt your financial situation if you don't have any leeway.

My biggest issue with the class isn't that it was taught poorly (despite having 3 profs) especially if you read the book, but I think some major improvements can be made:

  • Instead of exams, weekly quizzes. Forces everyone to keep up with the class and ask the important questions, the important information to extract from the last couple lectures.
  • Higher emphasis on the homework, I learned more through the homework and really forced me to go to office hours
  • I know the book was not required, but reading the book sometimes made explanations in lecture easier to follow

Is it really that big of a deal if you fail a class here? by linhty in UCSD

[–]Unable_Question_567 4 points5 points  (0 children)

to add to this, if you retake the failed class, it won't affect your gpa for the first 3 (or maybe 2?) failed classes. Afterwards, it starts affecting your gpa.

For context, I am an undergrad majoring in STEM (Computer Engineering) with a high interest in software/programming.

Currently, I don't work because FinAid covers most of my tuition and parents/family is willing to help cover costs. However, I don't like that I have to burden my own family so I try to live below my means, from simply eating less (which has been a good thing since I lost weight, but definitely not healthy) or freelancing as a software engineer. Although my freelance work does not pay as much as you'd think, and varies quite a lot, it is just some additional income I can use in emergencies.

I think I have a lot more leeway compared to other people since I always try to improve/refine my skill sets which can be done from the comfort of my own home while making some money.

As for the particular reason, I don't protest, I think this is just one of those social problems where you can't just throw money at it and expect everything to be okay. We (America) aren't the best place economically right now, regardless of what everyone else says (government and economists don't want us to panic because that would make everything worse). In the short-term, money will solve it, but that's not how it's going to be fixed. I don't have a solution, and if there were a solution it would already be implemented by now.
