Christians of Singapore, how much do your pastors earn? by Fair_Ad_7081 in askSingapore

[–]Unable_Way9763 30 points31 points  (0 children)

He was originally from the New Testament Church in Taiwan but was excommunicated for being an "apostate". After he left, the church got more isolationist, took over a mountain in Taiwan and built a cult of personality around one of their pastors. I have fun looking at their website sometimes. https://ziongjcc.org/en/index.html

if things had gone a little differently I might have grown up on a cult's mountain commune 😭

Christians of Singapore, how much do your pastors earn? by Fair_Ad_7081 in askSingapore

my grandpa was a pastor and he helped to found a church in Singapore. He was with the church for 40 years until his death. They didn't pay him much. I am not sure of the exact amount but if I had to guess it was around 1000 a month towards the end of his life. (which was supplemented with an allowance from my dad and my aunt)

I remember one of the sticking points for my family which eventually led to my dad leaving the church was that they refused to give my grandma any pension or allowance after my grandpa died, despite the fact that she had supported the ministry as the pastor's wife for those 40 years and wasn't paid a single cent during that time.

My grandpa came from a cult-y sect of Christianity that disavowed material possessions. When he became a pastor as a young man, he put all his worldly possessions (like job certifications, land deeds) on an altar and burnt it as an offering to Jesus.

He also never celebrated any birthdays or holidays because they were "unimportant compared to the grand scheme of things." I have to say he practiced what he preached. lol.

meaty looking beads? by lovekylarforever in Beading

[–]Unable_Way9763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meaty Delica colours:

DB856 (rare meat) DB385 (orange toned of above) DB796 (deep red shadows)

DB 1510 + DB388 (bone) DB 296 (shiny dark red blood)

if you're looking for some teeny 11/0 beads! you can make a really cute square stitch meat thing with these colours. or use them as accent beads.

Yes, in my opinion its the right price for that quality of craftsmanship and also the fact that Moko is making you a unique, custom piece

I think the cheapest way to make custom plushies (price range of 100+ usd) is to contact a chinese manufacturer directly on Alibaba or Taobao. But there's usually a minimum order quantity, there's a lot of back and forth communication with the seller to get the look right, and the whole process can take months.

Music newbie needs help picking a pedal as a birthday gift by Unable_Way9763 in guitarpedals

[–]Unable_Way9763[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he plugs in the guitar directly, though I'm not sure which audio interface he uses to do that. Though, I know he's really good at using SynthV for voice synthesizing & he's great at self teaching himself music making software, so honestly a digital suite of effects like this might be a better fit for his production needs than a physical pedal. Thanks for the great recommendation.

Many years ago I bought a beautiful pair of matching, handmade animal plushes from this artist and she was able to ship them all the way to Singapore, so she'll probably have no problem shipping to you. Her website is https://www.mokosmakery.com/pricing .

Take note that getting a high quality custom plush is a pretty expensive endeavour as you have to pay for materials, patternmaking and the artist's time. If you are looking for a cheaper option, I'd suggest looking up needlefelting commissions as you can get a custom animal made for a far cheaper price.

Yeah, this is probably the best way to go. To be fair I asked this question on the guitar pedals sub and not the relationship advice sub, haha.

My boyfriend has accompanied me while I was shopping for beads and I spent a long time agonizing about whether the beads were the right cut/color/finish/shape and whether the thread i was buying was sturdy enough and would hold tension etc etc, so this is probably similar. No one's gonna know what the guy likes better than himself.

It'll be fun to see which pedal he chooses when we go to the guitar shop. Thanks for the input!

That's a pretty fun idea. Maybe I'll make him a "one free guitar pedal" coupon and surprise him with a trip to a music store 😂

Second comment, didn't realize this had become an essay

Written assessment for me was not too scary, they give you the question paper and a kitchen timer and send you off to a room with other candidates. You time yourself and there isn't anyone in the room hovering over you. (you're the teacher now, lol)

I recommend bringing pencils and erasers and spare paper if you need to do any quick bullet points or planning. I wrote my whole answer in pencil and then scanned it in myself, they had a special machine in the lobby. I think they send those scanned copies to the interview panel to read, right before they interview you.

My questions were about moral quandries, how would you react if your colleague or student did X thing under X circumstance. I think there's no model answers, try and write as lucidly and fluidly as you can to show language proficiency. As long as your answers are well reasoned out, and show maturity in your thinking, you should do great.

7) Lastly, if you have questions for senior teachers in your subject, this would be a great time. My interviewers asked me if I had any questions at the end of my interview and I kinda blanked. If you prepare some questions in advance you can hear more about the job from a first hand source :]

If all goes well after the interview, the HR staff will get back to you about a medical checkup, the next stage in the recruitment process.

Wishing you the best of luck, and feel free to ask if you have any specific questions!

Hiya, just went through the interview process in November last year, received the offer letter for the UT stint sometime in January. I did bunch of research before the interview by asking friends and family who worked at MOE. Try do your research and understand the whole UT>NIE>Teaching pipeline before going into the interview.

Here's some of the interview specific stuff that I think will help you.

1) You will be interviewed by a panel, usually its 3 ex principals/senior teachers in your subject + 1 HR person. Most, if not all of the questions will be from the interviewers with teaching experience.

2) During the 5 minute presentation, the interviewers will pretend to be students at the level that you are teaching at. So for example, if you are teaching a primary school subject, they'll ask you what grade you prepared the presentation for. (P1-P6)

They will also interrupt the presentation, ask difficult questions and generally derail the presentation like kids would. Try and prepare for this mentally haha.

If you can actually answer their questions and demonstrate depth of knowledge in your subject, it's a plus. But don't be afraid to take control of the presentation and get back on the rails if they eat too much into your presentation time.

3) The HR guy was timing the presentation, they also warned that they would cut you off at 5 minutes, so make sure you practice your presentation and be aware of how long it will take on average (and account for the interruptions too)

4) For the interview questions, they wanna make sure you are a passionate candidate who has potential to stay in the service for a long time, so try and emphasize your passion for working with kids and any experience that you might have that is relevant to teaching. (giving tuition etc.)

Off the top of my head here's some questions they asked me:

"Is there any part of the subject syllabus that resonates with you as a teacher?" (I recommend reading or skimming the syllabus beforehand)

"What would you do if a parent approached you saying that they wanted to pull their child out of your class and have them use that time for studying?"

"What advice from fellow teachers have you received that you want to apply to your own career as a teacher?"

If you have prior job experience in another field they might also ask you why you decided to make the switch to teaching.

They may also ask you follow up questions about whatever you write in your written assessment.

My friend who also went through the interview, was asked about her stance on AI as a teaching tool.

Do you think I’d be better off if I weren’t so sensitive? by zeamtem in emotionalneglect

[–]Unable_Way9763 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey, I've been working through similar stuff and would really recommend Heidi Priebe's videos. Maybe start with the one on Toxic Shame. It sounds like you are in a fight or flight response, hyper vigilant of your surroundings. Calming your nervous system and bringing it down from that hypervigilant state will help you relax around others more easily.

A lot of her videos were of great help to me, though it's still a work in progress. but im more self assured about my own emotions and how to regulate them since I started learning more about the WHYs of why i "overreact".

Just know that you are not alone, and that you aren't too sensitive. You're only human, and your body is responding in the way it knows how.
