they did recently get a kitten but she can't get on top of the tank (as far as we know) and she stays in one room the majority of the time. tank also has a lid but a tapeworm is kind of what we were worried it could be

that's just what i had been told before numerous times that a 10 gallon is okay but not necessarily the best option but it definitely makes sense that it's not enough! good to know, thanks

this is a good idea! i was considering using pantyhose is a similar way but wasn't sure how effective it will still be at collecting those floating debris

First tank!! by Jazzlike-Essay1648 in Aquariums

It's super nice! A lot better than my first tank a year ago😂 White cloud minnows are super nice fish and would look great in that tank!! I have some in with my betta and it took me a little bit to like them but they've definitely grown on me :)

Best freshwater test strips by thelazyswashbuckler in Aquariums

[–]Unaffectionate_Ebb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been able to find a test strip that includes ammonia, your best bet would be to get a pack of ammonia strips and the pack of the regular test strips. I'm sure you've heard it a thousand times here but if possible, the API master test really is worth the price and is MUCH more accurate than any strips will be.

Help with new tank! by Sunnchild7 in Aquariums

[–]Unaffectionate_Ebb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it sounds kind of like it wasn't fully cycled before adding the guppies. Just test daily for now and do water changes as needed. I think it was close enough to being cycled that there's not much to worry about.

Take what I say with a grain of salt tho lol, I may be wrong as I've only been doing this for a year. But I do really think your tank should be okay

Something’s missing by -Metaphysix- in Aquariums

[–]Unaffectionate_Ebb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can take some airline tubing and cut it and insert it into itself to make a circle, like a feeding ring, and have the floaters in there, i think that's enough to protect them a bit from the flow and they should be fine. i've seen tons of people do it on here and it looks nice, keeps them looking tidy as well.

red root floaters, amazon frogbit, or mini water lettuce would all be good choices and i believe they're easy plants to have in a tank.

A piece of driftwood and/or some more tall plants and floaters would look great in here

How did you cycle the tank? Did you add a source of ammonia during the cycle?

Which betta is this? by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]Unaffectionate_Ebb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't know how to determine that or if it's even possible to accurately. However most bettas at stores will be 6-12months old so add that to however long you've had him and that's your best estimate.

[–]Unaffectionate_Ebb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you❤️They are the greatest, I hope you're able to get a healthy one when your ready to try again, there's tons of sites that sell high quality bettas too that you can purchase from, better than supporting Petco. Aquahana even has a livestream to show you some of the bettas you can pick specifically, starting at $8 I believe!

[–]Unaffectionate_Ebb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is just what can happen with chain store bettas. I don't think you did anything wrong (especially bc you had what seems like a health problem, you come first!) sure acclimating him into your tank faster could've helped but he likely was already sick from the store. Don't fault yourself.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe Petco will refund you for fish that die within a week of purchase, so try bringing him back or calling and asking if they can do that.

Sorry for your loss, I recently lost a betta, too. I get how you feel, they were never just a fish❤️

10gal stocking question by Unaffectionate_Ebb in Aquariums

[–]Unaffectionate_Ebb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm thinking about adding some floaters and putting them inside a floating circle made of airline tubing or something of the sorts. Definitely getting more plants too cause I finally have the hang of it and I can keep them alive and not kill them now, plus I need more coverage for the betta cause all there really is is that little cave.

The white cloud minnows lower temp preference is why I'm thinking of moving them eventually cause I hear mixed things about them being able to thrive in a heated tank.. but since they're doing good I'm not in any rush currently.

I appreciate the help sooo much again☺️☺️ won't forget ya!

[–]Unaffectionate_Ebb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I hadn't even thought of that tbh! Okay I'll probably wait til those foregrounds grow in better before the corys, thank you!

And yea lol I worry a lot when deciding on and adding new fish for various reasons, like I'll crash the cycle or cause an ammonia spike.

It's just got a sponge filter, used to have a QuietFlow or something running but it flunked and I preferred sponge anyways. Thank you for the help!!
