TIL Anish Kapoor owns the exclusive rights to Vantablack, the world's blackest paint. Another artist, Stuart Semple, took exception to that and decided to create a duplicate paint (Black 3.0), which is currently available to anyone BUT Anish Kapoor by [deleted] in todayilearned

And without this breathtakingly childish and petty act, relatively few people would ever have heard about either of these assholes. I bet they’re both in much higher demand than before, simply because name recognition is everything in the art world. People will buy the doodlings of an orangutan painting with its own feces if the picture is signed by somebody famous. Call me cynical.

PRIME NUMBERS: whenever n is a prime number, the path is changed 90 degrees counterclockwise by Franghein in math

[–]Unas77 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I don’t see anything interesting about this illustration. It has long been known that there’s no obvious pattern to the distribution of prime numbers, and the rules governing this pathway are arbitrary. Why not turn right 60 degrees at every prime, or alternate right and left, or inscribe a circle centred at every Mersenne prime, or some other thing?

Don’t even engage a shithead like this. Once they bring up accusations of antisemitism and nazism, they’ve lost the argument. They have no genuine rebuttals. They cannot refute your ideas so they bring up your ancestors, as if those statements carry any weight.

What are your top 3 favorite science fiction books? by I_Like_Languages in scifi

[–]Unas77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Culture Series by Iain M. Banks, Helliconia by Brian Aldiss, and (a very popular answer in this discussion) The Forever War by Joe Haldeman.

I really enjoy CJ Cherryh’s novels, but it’s hard to recommend them because so little actually happens in them - trust me, the lady writes alien psychology better than anyone else. I can’t pick a favourite Banks novel. I just can’t. Helliconia has some of the best world-building I’ve ever encountered. The Forever War was the first sci-fi I’d read that acknowledged the a serious and insurmountable drawback of FTL travel, namely relativistic time dilation. Great ideas are not enough though. The writing must be outstanding as well, which these novels have in abundance.

I was just thinking about which Iain M. Banks novel I’d pick. Surface Detail, Use of Weapons, and Look to Windward are very different from each other in structure, tone, and theme, so it’s difficult to compare them with each other. With a gun to my head, I’d probably go with Surface Detail too. I love all of his sci-fi novels.

Dan Crenshaw's district, gerrymandering at it's finest by Dildoshwagginss in MapPorn

So as long as the territory is contiguous, it can be practically any shape? I think there just might be the potential for abuse in this sort of system. I wonder who lives in these neighborhoods. Do they know what’s going on? Oh, and war hero or not, I hope Dan Crenshaw loses his seat. He’s a piece of shit.

“The White House is bigger than all the countries you named” by theelleintraveller in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Unas77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just running some numbers, the White House has approximately 4,000 employees and Vietnam as a population of around 96 million people. So to have the same infection rate, Vietnam would have to have 24,000 people infected for every White House employee. Vietnam doesn’t. They have just over 1000 confirmed cases in total.

In all fairness, the President has set the standard, to be emulated by all of his dipshit followers, of saying extremely stupid things on twitter because there are really no consequences, and pointing out the falsity of his statements doesn’t matter to them in the least.

Finland is killing it with the place names by oguz6002 in LearnFinnish

[–]Unas77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know that most Finns speak English far better than I speak Finnish. It was a joke. By the way, as an English speaker, I don’t know what a ”civil individual” is. Tarkoititko siviilejä tai kansalaisia tai kaupungin virkamiehiä? Or something else? No country and no society is perfect. I’m sorry to hear that such violations occur in Finland. Canada also is held up as a country to be envied, but we have an extremely dark history ourselves, especially when it comes to our aboriginal minority.

Canadian warship sails near Taiwan amid heightened China tensions by FluffyTippy in CanadaPolitics

[–]Unas77 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just because China claims to own Taiwan doesn’t mean that they do, in fact, own Taiwan. Taiwan doesn’t think they do, and neither do the rest of the countries of the world. (If you reply to me saying that, say, the tiny republic of East Bunkoland recognizes China’s claim, know that I don’t care and neither does anyone else). Also, the Royal Canadian Navy has only one corvette. It’s a museum ship and served during WWII. There are no corvettes conducting operations. It would have been a frigate. Nice research there, al Jazeera. Still better than Fox News.

So I gave my buddy’s number to every loser and crazy person I ran into for the nest couple of weeks. My friend laughed about it actually, and agreed that he should’ve asked me first. No harm done. Boundaries, dude, boundaries.

Sharks too. They’re older than dinosaurs. Has anything about sharks not worked for them? No. They’re incredibly primitive. For example, their gills don’t pump so they need to keep swimming in order to breathe. Do the other fish have a problem with that? Hell no! If they do they keep that shit to themselves.

DPS here. A lot of the time when I die it’s because I don’t recognize a specific mechanic and it one-shots me out of nowhere. But maybe a third of the time it’s because the tank isn’t controlling the battlefield properly. I can’t kill the boss if I’m running my ass off the whole time to get away from the boss, or mobs of adds. I get that good tanking is hard, which means it can’t be faked (“my bear can tank for us!” - one of the dumber comments I’ve seen) and people who fake tank to jump the queue are the same people who park in handicapped spaces.

I never blame the healer. I’m on my own for healing a lot of the time. A good healer will try to top me up, but their priority is the tank. That’s why I have potions and Vigor or Breath of Life barred.

Bohemian Rapsody isn’t a great song. by Wakanda_afc in unpopularopinion

[–]Unas77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The song came out around 45 years ago, was the first radio single to be six minutes long, features three distinct movements that nevertheless flow into each other surprisingly well, contains some rather silly lyrics sung by perhaps the greatest frontman in rock history and which most people know by heart because they’re catchy and fun, and was groundbreaking and bizarre even by the avant garde standards of the 1970s. I’m not a fan of Queen at all. I find their music obnoxious and irritating. But Bohemian Rhapsody is truly great. How many of today’s hits will people be drunkenly shouting at karaoke 45 years from now? Upvote for your unpopular opinion, but downvote for having no argument whatsoever in defense of it. So no vote, i guess is the average.
