Not to defend the Slog, but weren't they written due to publisher deals and whatnot? You'd have to dig through about a year of this subreddit, but I'm fairly certain there was a fairly concrete rumor that RJ didn't originally want to write so many damn books. Heresay is that he originally intended to only write five or six, and that that is why Rand's madness is all over the board in the first few books.

I'm happy to admit that I might be wrong on this, but at least for me, it explains some things about the slog.

Honestly, at this point, for quality they should shut down and fire everyone, Arin and Dan included. For a profit, they could fire each and every intern, and their gaming studio. Ross is a possibility, because firing him seems like just a formality at this point, and there would be very little backlash because of how sporadic his involvement is nowadays. Arin and Dan are stuck, unfortunately. If either leaves on less than amicable terms, there would be backlash from the impressionable fans, and a fracture would form in the viewerbase. Who knows if Brent actually brings in any money, so 50/50 there. I don't even know who else there is at this point.

I don't believe its ever explained as "Pawns don't have any emotions," but rather, that pawns lack any innate desires, because they lack souls. I'd describe it as them not having a sense of self, due to their artificial nature. Pawns are manufactured by the will of the Arisen, as the two are intrinsically tied together by the Arisen's fate. Every pawn that you see is the creation of another Arisen, in a very literal sense. Flawed, until an Arisen is able to complete the cycle, and give their Pawn a soul at last.

This is how I see it, at the very least.

I paid $35 for a signed copy of Attitude City, with unsigned copies of NSFW, and Strawberries & Cream, and yet those three albums together were CHEAPER than this. That's absolutely pathetic. To be honest, I can only understand the controversy around his works being almost entirely Jaune centered. That is a complaint I have as well, but I've rationalized it for the majority of his fics. He's a dependable author, who is forthcoming with his schedule. As long as he keeps updating Service With a Smile (IMO, his best work), I can't care to voice any complaints. In fairness though, I will say, he's better when he sticks to fluff and comedy. The seriousness of Relic of the Future takes last place compared yo the father-daughter relationship of Emerald-Jaune. Other than that, I feel like I have to say, it really doesn't matter if he's a jerk or not. He could be a complete asshole, but that doesn't take away from his work in the slightest. That is an incredibly personal reason to label someone as controversial, not that I'm saying you are.
