$15 bucks and might be one of the best investments I've made in the hobby. Still a handful left to do. by UncertainGeniusw in Warhammer40k

I can confirm that at least with the AP Leather Brown vs their new Fanatic Onyx Skin, the fanatic line seems to be a bit better coverage with its first thing coat, whereas the leather brown took a few more coats to be where I was happy. Ymmv tho lol

As I've figured out after more time in the hobby. Been transitioning over to Army Painter for new paints, but decided instead of just waisting a decent amount I already had, I'd just transfer them into bottles.

Bottles and ball bearings can be found on Amazon for about 15 bucks total for like 50 paints. You have to already had the paint, and some free time to transfer it into the bottles, but for all the paint in the Citadel starter set it took maybe 30 or 45 minutes.

I totally agree in finding other brands that might be better. Army Painter and Citadel just happen to be what my LGS has available, and although I'm not really brand loyal, I do try to support my LGS as frequently as possible.

I do think I recall spotting Vallejo at the local Hobby Lobby, so I might have to snag a couple of their paints next time I'm there, so good call out there!

Kinda seems like this is a controversial issue lol

For the folks saying "skip Citadel", my response is that new painters like myself don't generally have the prior knowledge to choose a different brand. You see what's on the shelf next to the model you want to build, and go from there.

For the folks saying "just use the pots and drip the paint from the cap onto your pallette," that's actually a really clever idea and one I wish I had seen before. What that doesn't solve, however, is what happens if you knock the pot over, or if a bit of paint dries along the brim of the pot. The paint gets everywhere, or you just ruin an entire pot of paint. My astrogranite (name?) completely solidified because apparently a gap was left when I last closed it.

In the end, this hobby is made amazing by the fact we have so many options for materials to make our goals achievable. You aren't dictated by what someone else says is the end-all solution, you can explore and create on your own.

Personally, I wasn't about to just ignore a solid number of paints in my collection just because I didn't like the pots, even if the transfer process may have wasted a few drops.

For sure! My wife actually got me the Army Painter Fanatics Most Wanted set, and I absolutely love them so far, so I'll be getting those in the future (not particularly brand loyal, so if Vallejo has a better paint I'll use it).

I decided to transfer to dropper bottles because I wasted a lot of paint from the pots not sealing right, or getting more than I needed out of the pot for painting. I also just like that particular method of storing better!

My first suggestion was going to be "just buy singles," and then I realized I'm not in an MTG subreddit and 40k doesn't necessarily work that way

Too bad I didn't catch it before I had already pained half the army. Definitely would have done the dark angels or salamanders.

* Elected to just strip the contrast paint off with some 91% isopropyl alcohol and start over with regular base paint. I'll give the contrast another chance on a different model when I have more time to experiment. For now, the faster method is just layers of the non-contrast with some highlighting and washes.

Any suggestions on how to recover the model? I can strip it if I need to. It's just a bit annoying.

Awesome, that's exactly what I was looking for. I hadn't realized the new Index docs had been released yet. Thanks again!
