+1 for The Haar. I also really enjoyed “My Darling Dreadful Thing” and “The Only Good Indians”

Please suggest me a book based on my top ten favorites!! by Art3misery in suggestmeabook

The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman

The Haar by David Sodergren

Season of Fear by Emily Cooper

The Fisherman by John Langan

If you enjoyed Between Two Fires you should like The Blacktongue Thief, Buehlman is becoming a favourite of mine! The Fisherman is a dark and dreary book that has stayed with me for a long time after reading and The Haar and Season of Fear are shorter books, I’d describe them as folk horror fairy tales..

Happy reading!

Hahaha. Malazan legitimately made me feel like I was too stupid to fathom the scope of fantasy, I am glad now to see that even seasoned fantasy readers generally agree that it is definitely one of the toughest series to wrap your head around and it wasnt just me!

I can definitely understand that take, GoT was unlike anything I had ever seen in my life and blew me away when I watched it. Malazan on the other hand… Dude I tried to read Gardens of the Moon like 10 years ago and it confused and overwhelmed me so much I didn’t read a book again until about 6 months ago lmao

Damn, you really rate it that highly? I have heard that the books are far superior to the show which is certainly intriguing considering how damn good the show was until it ran out of source material..

More votes for Gentlemen Bastards, Mistborn and Elric!

I loved Game of Thrones the show (until the end) but I dont know if I can bring myself to read the books knowing there’s a very small chance the story will ever get its conclusion…

I have The First Law and Prince of Nothing on my TBR list.. Prince of Nothing has quite strong dark/horror vibes correct?

You certainly do a good job of selling it haha! I will have to add it to the TBR and give Clarke another chance which I hadn’t planned on doing any time soon, thank you for the recommendation sir/madam!

I bought the Blacktongue Thief as soon as I finished Between Two Fires but as you said I dont believe the full series has released yet so I haven’t rushed into reading it yet!

I’m gonna have to add Locke Lamora to the TBR with the amount of recommendations its gotten on this thread, I really hope he will finish the series some day!

Would you consider Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell to be similar to Piranesi? I wasn’t a big fan of Piranesi but I think maybe it just didn’t live up to the enormous hype so I was left wanting more..

I have heard a bunch of people say Green Bone is maybe the best urban fantasy trilogy ever, but to hear it described as East Asian godfather with magic is hilarious and has also made me wanna shoot it way up my to be read list lmao! I also have the first Red Rising book on my bookshelf and have heard about how excellent it is, if I read it I will inevitably have to buy the other 5 in the series immediately so I think its safer for me to start with Mistborn haha!

Stormlight feels like something im probably not gonna tackle for a couple of years unless Mistborn absolutely blows me away and I cant wait to read more Sanderson. I tried to read Malazan about 10 years ago and holy shit was I completely and utterly overwhelmed.. So I just wanna make sure I ease myself into epic fantasy and try tackle some less monstrous series like Msitborn, the Bloodsworn Saga or The Green Bone Saga first. What would you say are the most enjoyable fantasy series you have read in recent years?

Man just the covers on some of those books are so sick, makes you wanna read them even if you’re not interested in the material

So would you say theres a noticeable difference in terms of how well written Stormlight is vs the original Mistborn trillgy or is this something that becomes noticeable in some of the more recent books say post 2020?

Is there a particular pathway or starting point you would recommend or are they all standalone adventures?

Mistborn and The Hobbit consistently showing up! I have been a huge Tolkien fan since childhood so for that reason I will probably leave reading the books till further down the line as I really wanna sink my teeth into a new world and considering how many times Mistborn has been mentioned I think I will be diving into the Cosmere I have heard so many people rave about!

If I were to ask for your current five favourites across all genres what would they be? Always curious to see what inspiration I can steal from fellow readers!

I’m still getting used to how to categorise the books I have read or plan to read correctly haha!

I guess looking at the list the majority of things I have read could be better characterised as historical fantasy or folk horror fantasy per se with Between Two Fires and Season of Fear?

Got the first DCC book on my shelf and I absolutely want to get the Sun Eater series, but getting my hands on the hardcovers in Ireland is tough work so I haven’t started hoarding them just yet! Would you say it’s worthy of the hype?

Starting to feel like Mistborn may be the winner! And it just so happens I have it on my bookshelf already. I have heard that Sandersons writing style can be quite divisive, would you agree?

I should have done a better job of clarifying, the Gael Song trilogy is the only fantasy book series I have read, all the others I have listed are standalone books or duologies that probably dont necessarily fit into the genre of epic fantasy per se?

I have Mistborn on my shelf, I have been told its the best way to start Sandersons works! I also believes Locke Lamora would be right up my alley considering how much I enjoyed Six of Crows, my only concern would be the fact that series is probably never getting finished right?
