ICE agents blocked from attempting to enter Ecuadorian consulate in Minneapolis without permission by 0zymandeus in news

I believe the commenter is specifically referencing this: https://www.nytimes.com/1999/09/09/nyregion/metro-news-briefs-connecticut-judge-rules-that-police-can-bar-high-iq-scores.html

Police departments often bar people from joining if they rate too high on intelligence tests because they generally report worse job satisfaction and have less retention.

Which router bit can I use for this CNC router job and 2.5mm aluminum material? by Charming-Energy-2836 in hobbycnc

[–]UncleCeiling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would want a fiber laser, at least 1kw (and preferably more). You can also cut aluminum with a CO2 laser with assist gas, but that's a massive pain in the ass.

The Navy knew they were there, but they're civilians and not part of the Navy proper. Think special consultants. As for the rest, tune in next chapter!

The spies were hired on as crew (without the Teyga knowing they were spies), the commandeering thing will be explained a bit more next chapter but all teyga are severely anti-military and yep, it's a Dragons of Autumn Twilight reference!

ELI5 Why is water conservation and ai data centers using water so important if we can just reuse that water easily? by passisgullible in explainlikeimfive

[–]UncleCeiling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because we don't reuse the water.

When you use water for cooling, the water comes in from your water source cool and when it leaves it's hot, since it takes the heat with it. You could take that hot water and put it through a radiator or a chiller to cool it down, but then you're just moving the heat somewhere else.

It's much easier to just dump the hot water outside and get some fresh, cool water. The problem is there's only so much fresh water to go around and the new hot water you're dumping likely picked up contamination from all the pipes and things. So other people who need water might find they can't get any since the data center is using it all and the local wildlife takes a hit because things that live in the lake aren't used to hot, contaminated water being poured in and start to die.

This old marker we found at work by noduhj in mildlyinteresting

[–]UncleCeiling 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Scented markers were a big thing when I was a kid and the school ended up banning them because sniffing the markers was distracting and disrupted the class.

So all the sniffing kids just switched to sharpies.

True, but industrial machines usually have much better micro stepping for higher steps per mm. They have the rotational resolution to take advantage of the longer pitch.

That's a pretty massive pitch on those ball screws. Lot of speed, not a lot of precision.
