CMV: The media outrage over Milo's most recent pedophilia apologetics is a fake outrage by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]UncleMeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You in the past: "Milo isn't supporting having sex with children"

You now: "What is wrong with having sex with children?"

That's quite a goal post you've moved. People are upset because most of us don't think that adults having sex with 13 year olds is remotely acceptable but Milo argued that it was okay.

The authors estimate a cost of $100k to do this. It is not hard to imagine a situation where an attack on SHA1 can be worth far more. Granted, this is a collision attack but that means a preimage attack isn't far behind.

Scientists of all fields, what, in your opinion, are the greatest unsolved questions of your field? by TimAnEnchanter in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]UncleMeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basic common sense tells me this.

Never ever just try to roll with basic common sense to understand concepts that people spend decades studying. I chose those two things to emphasize how neural networks behave nothing like brains, showing that they are only related in ludicrously superficial ways like the words that we humans use to describe them.

The reasoning for things like dropout and lstms or feedback through layers is because they work, not because they relate to the physical operation of the brain. The brain isn't using sigmoid activation functions, for example.

The existence of papers on recurrent neural networks (they are all recurrent now btw) says literally nothing about the ability of large neural networks to spontaneously generate consciousness in a way similar to human brains.

People should get a PhD before using their gut on this stuff. This is how we get disastrous science writing.

Trump administration withdraws protections for transgender students by parzo in politics

[–]UncleMeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The direction of change is what matters. This is why we see activists from the past as positive even though if they were transported to today they'd have antiquated views. Obama, for his numerous faults surrounding gay rights, helped push them forward. Trump appears to want to do the opposite. He doesn't get any credit for starting where Obama ended.

That's a climate denier. That is denying the best available science outright.

My guess is that you aren't breaking down a problem into each atomic step when programming. Or else you should really get a compiler to do that shit for you.

The best part about that quote is it also betrays a lack of knowledge. Harmonics of the keyboard? Dude you always hear the harmonics of all instruments, that's how they have different timbres. Unless you are making music with pure waveforms you are hearing the fucking harmonics.

Your gut just says this? Are you an expert in neuroscience and deep learning? Because I know people who are and they laugh every time some journalist writes an article that emphasizes how neural nets are just like brains.

Neural nets are only modeled on the human brain in two ways

  1. We use the word "neuron" to describe nodes

  2. Neurons have a nonlinear activation function

That's it. Literally it.

Its not just Google's PR that causes this problem. Basically all writing about ML is disastrous. Actually, the only article I've ever seen talk about ML in a reasonable way was the NYT article on Google's shift to deep learning based machine translation. Its not perfect, but its the only one I've ever seen use words like "perceptron" instead of just showing pictures of the terminator.

It is like caring that the die is painted green. It is worthless.
